Anybody here need any old tools?

I thought that would get your attention.

I hadn't realised this before, but David Stanley specialist tool auctions can now be seen on-line. The full catalogue of their next international sale is available here to browse through - 1065 historic reminders that old tools can be useful, beautiful, ingenious and frequently quite expensive.

But even if you don't want to bid on-line, or create a wish-list for that special treat that you really deserve, or find inspiration for your next tool-making project, there is a lot to look at and enjoy.

And if anyone wants to buy me this (made by that nice Mr Holtzapffel) I would be very grateful!!

What would anyone else like?

I hesitate slightly to ask this - but - why do you need to smooth a killer whale? :?:

Large amounts of these lots are from the David Russell collection and are in his BIG book :!:
Great chance to fondle and examine some of the rarest stuff available :idea:
I will be up there both days all being well 8)
Don't forget there are bargains to be found if you beat the dealers to the stuff for sale on the sellers tables :roll:
If you turn up say "hi" (ask Bill and Sarah Carter who I am ) be nice to put some faces to names .....

I'd love to go, but I think one of the 'general' sales is more my end of the market. I did once blunder in to one when they were in Burton a few years ago but I didn't really appreciate what I was looking at then. I will try some time!

Found it! Lot 458! Very cute. Ideal for use on wet timber, presumably.

Interesting indeed....as I got to LOT 513......

The description of which is....

Description:
An early and very rare 7 1/4" d/t steel block plane by SPIERS with rosewood infill and scrolled wedge and screwed sides (see Lampert p 30 suggesting this is probably Spiers earliest smoothing plane) G JEJ
Estimate:
£300 - £500

Now.....let me see...exhibit A of Jimi's collection of infills...couple of quid at a bootfair.....

...a slightly later Spiers of Ayr with lever cap but quite old too!

Surprised to see that lot 174 which come up on ebay from time to time and are next to unusable is only valued at £10 less than lot 175 which cost substantially more new and will likely become quite rare and therefore appreciate like a rocket in years to come.

All sorts of loveliness in that holtzapffel tryptich, perhaps someone should start making them again...?

My personal fave would have to be lot 994, if only to prove that I'm not the first in this game to go bald and grey before my time.

I was somewhat taken aback at the valuation put on the GTL - I know everyone and their grandmother has probably been taken in by one at some point, before they knew any better, but a specialist auction? Tsk.

And the miniature of Holtzapffel is lovely - just as a miniature, never mind the tool connection.

Just got back from Stanley's :roll: had a wonderful afternoon chatting and meeting with a great bunch of people 8)
Worth a look in if your nearby as this sale has some exquisite items on offer and you can have a real good "fondle" even if you don't buy ought :lol:
At least 15 table sales pitching up as well
Just need to get there early tomorrow #-o :wink:
