any one use metal detectors

Hi folks just wondering if anyone uses a metal detector on used timber prior to cutting, if so what make and model would you recommend?

I use one of these http://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+little-wiz ... 902?tyah=y Infact I used it only yesterday when a chap turned up at the shop wanting some old reclaimed Sepele window frames planing up

Works a treat, nice & compact & takes a 9volt battery, if you wait a while Rutlands will have a discount weekend etc so you should be able to get it for less than their RRP

Simpler, cheaper, needs no batteries: rare earth magnet. It finds iron/steel really well but not copper, aluminium etc, but these are soft and relatively harmless.
They come in all shapes and sizes. I've got one of these.

Handy for other things too - I use 2 of them to hold my dust extractor bag in position whilst fixing the strap (Doug's tip!) Otherwise you need 3 hands and a prehensile knob :roll:

You can get them free by breaking up a loudspeaker.

Norm Abram used one in the New Yankee Workshop; it's very sensitive and has never failed me, even picking up the little shards of rust left behind from a disintegrated screw. The length makes it easy to sweep a large board. (I also use it to locate our water meter cover which tends to get covered up by undergrowth!)

I don't now recall where I bought it in the UK (or I might have picked it up on a US visit). Anyway, well worth looking out for.

This is the one i use, its quite good and like Scholar says it even picks up remaining shards of rust left embedded in the timber.
It is actually my partners for when she goes metal detecting but i've pilfered it for the workshop!
