It looks nice and heavy - well done.

Will you mount a face vice? As that top mounted will one is bound to get in the way sonner rather than later

Cheers for all the compliments. I've been wanting to post some work up here for ages. I just didn't want to jump the gun.

I'm not sure whether to mount any vice at the moment. The one on the top isn't actually mounted yet as I'm sure it will get in the way. I may mount it on an offcut which will then sit in the dog holes.

The base was all constructed using mortice and tenon joints. The scrap of plywood in the bottom left was used to guide a router for the mortices. The tenons were first tried with a circular saw (making several cuts and knocking out the waste) and then with a router (which proved to be faster and a lot more accurate).

The whole bench is rock solid and very heavy. The plan was to do the top with softwood as well but I came across the ledbury auction where I bought some ash. The extra cost and effort was well worth it.

The workshop was a rather poor attempt at my first workshop. I somehow convinced myself that small would be better to start with so that I could concentrate on making things rather than buying things. I could start building a bigger workshop tomorrow (the garden is large enough) but I'd need to get power down to the bottom of the garden (about 90 feet away). So, at least for this year, I'm now concentrating on making things (a few kitchen chopping boards, some garden benches, a second adirondack chair, bird table and of course some candle holders!).

Looks good, Dave =D>

Glad to see you've got some Veritas bench dogs. You will find these very useful and see the value of clamping work between dogs on the bench top. I would guess you will end up with a couple of Record 52Ds, one on the right-hand end of the bench and one on the front left (assuming you are right-handed). Still you can do a lot with the Veritas dogs in the meantime.

Enjoy using it

It certainly looks the part, Dave.

I hope you made it easy enough to break down, though. Doesn't look like you've got any room to manouvre it out when the time comes

Dave,

Nice looking bench, I used ash too. :D
The record vices are a good idea, just keep your eyes open, they turn up in the oddest of places.
