Another wood I-D thread

Sorry, but what do you all think the vertical piece was made from - its a Scandinavian/North European wood, by the look it has very hard winter rings, not so much with the summer growth. I'm thinking some kind of spruce, maybe. Top piece is yew, btw. The piece is very old and preserved after being pulled from a lake so colour is not going to be of too much help in this one.

I'd be amazed if you can get an ID any more than tree-wood from that photo.
