In order to get my design right I need to change my default measuring from imperial to metric, any ideas :?

Sure. Buy a new measuring tape. 
Actually, click on Window>Model Info>Units. change it there.

A little tape measure story.
Most of my working life I have worked with metal, mainly fabricating, I had an apprentice working with me and one day I had to go out on site for a few hours, so I left him with a few easy jobs like a cutting list and some marking out. when I got back I asked him how he got on, excellent, he said, I finished half an hour ago, well done, I said whilst running my tape measure over the cut lengths of steel, hold on, these are all 1mm too short, are you sure he said, because i fixed that old tape measure you gave me, why whay was wrong with it, I said, the end was loose he replied, so I hit it with the hammer to tighten the rivets. :roll:
