Good afternoon, UKWorkshoppers.

Another new member here.

I've been lurking here for a few days reading through thousands of posts, whilst I make some decisions about setting up my workshop, and mulling over future projects.

I consider myself a beginner, and I hasten to add, not one of those modest "beginners" with 50 years experience. My workshop consists of half a double garage, becoming a full double garage when I need the space (and move the car out). The workshop space is not dedicated to woodwork, and is also home to some metalworking and car maintenance.

My tool collection consists mostly of hand tools at the moment. I was inspired in that direction a couple of years ago when I saw Rob Cosman's demo at the APTC show (RIP (the show that is not Mr Cosman)).

I'm not healthy enough (too much beer/little exercise ) to consider complete hand preparation of rough sawn stock, so I'm currently looking at buying a p/t (probably a Jet JPT310) and a tablesaw (undecided yet).

Expect some more structured questions to follow :wink:

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum. What kind of projects do you have in mind? Once that is decided it is much easier to decide on tools and machinery. There's lots of friendly advice to be had here, no question too dumb.

Not really. The car HAS to live in the garage thanks to the insurance company, it just gets moved out for the day when I have some larger stock to work with.

Although I am building some outside storage to move some of the extraneous rubbish out of the workshop (mowers, gardening equipment etc.). Before anyone suggests it, no there isn't room to build a separate workshop. This forum has too many workshop WIP posts anyway :wink:. Not that I am jealous or anything.

The tablesaw shortlist is very, ermmm, short.

I am looking for an accurate saw with an accurate fence and cast iron table. Don't really have room for a sliding table, and I'll have to move it about on wheels (after moving the car out)
Have been thinking of the Xcalibur 806, but I'd like to see it in the flesh and test the fence.

I looked at a Jet saw at the APTC show, and I wasn't that impressed. The fence seemed sloppy and clamped at an inconsistent angle, but it may just have been that it was poorly set up.

I may end up going down the second hand route, maybe go for a 10" Wadkin cabinet saw and change the motor for a single phase unit, although I'm not sure what one of these costs in good condition. The ones that appear on eBay all look like they have done time in the Titanic workshop.

Welcome mate, as a relative newcomer here I can assure you they will make you very welcome.

Check with your car insurance, I asked for a quote at my old house when I decided I was going to get rid of the garage to build a workshop, the quote was exactly the same and when I asked why they said the garage didn't effect cost but I had to notify where it would be kept.

If it costs the same then boot the car out (it should hopefully be waterproof :lol: ) and make your workshop bigger. Space is your friend!

And the best advice I've had from here so far... Wheels!!! Put everything on wheels.

It has to stay in the garage, it is a bit unusual, and not meant to be kept outside (a 550hp sports car I built myself over a couple of years).

I have thought about renting some garage space from a local farmer to keep the car in. But moving the car in and out is no great hardship as long as I have my TS on wheels.

Hi PaulO - presumably the car is on wheels which makes that fairly easy to move :wink: And I'll be the first to ask - can we see a photo of the aforementioned - just out of interest :shock:

Hi and welcome Paul. I agree with Martin and his comment about wheels. Most of my equipment is on wheels, due to the fact that my workshop has reverse TARDIS syndrome, it's smaller on the inside and getting smaller by the day! :shock: I am sure you will get plenty of advice on here. :wink:
