I'm mulling over doing this for my next project, it's ambitious but I think that there's no point doing something unless it's a challenge... Well not TOO much of a challenge since I've got all the measurements from F&C magazine

I'm thinking about how to tinker with the design slightly to make my mark on it and also what woods to use.

My initial thoughts were to do the the uprights in birds eye maple, the rest of the carcass in plain maple and the drawers in bubinga with detailing in purpleheart (handles and the top of the unit).

I picked bubinga as it has a nice distinct colour without being overly decorative - I've discounted zebrano for that reason. Maybe wenge would be nice, or maybe some mahogany or rosewood, or even ovangkol. Choices, choices....

Very nice design but I'd have to say I'm not sure how bubinga and purpleheart would go together, never seen it done though so I stand to be corrected :? ... Birds eye maple and bubinga sounds good though :D

That's a really good piece to do. If memory serves, the frame carcase is tapered from top to bottom so you'll need to draw the thing out full size to get all the correct angles. I'd just stick to two timbers, maple and bubinga say (for the drawers) purpleheart is too 'in your face' even for tiny details like handles (which ought to be restrained rather than clunky) - Rob

'tis only the outside of the frame that's tapered, the insides are all square, so it's pretty straight forward.

What I like about this piece is that it's quite repetitive - 4 uprights, all identical, 6 drawer frames, all identical, and the drawers are identical except for height.

I'll ditch the purpleheart and perhaps go with Ebony, which will then match the handles I'm doing for my current piece.

I went to have a look at the side of my cabinet last night - it actually glued up square and flat
