Just to make a change from gates and doors I decided to make a start on a cross for a customer. This is made out of some Oak I had and some of the offcuts from the gates. I didn't get on too bad today and managed to get the cross shaped and the crossbar fitted.

Ah yes, sorry Chunko, I should have explained. It is actually for her fathers grave. He died recently and they had seen the one I made earlier and liked it. :D

How tall is it?

There is a strict height restriction on memorials in the graveyard where my son is buried, and I presume others too!

It is 6' Pond but that includes 18" that will be buried in the ground. I made one the same size before and there was no problem with the graveyard.

Pond
It varies all around the UK

I've over the years done 5 now while waiting for the ground to settle before the headstone proper was fitted
It can even vary within the same town #-o #-o
Best bet is always to speak with the Vicar/Priest yourself

Being out on a job today I didn't get started on the cross until this afternoon. Having said that I did get on very well with it.
All I have to do now is add the plate for the plaque at the bottom and put a finish on.

I like it Alan, I remember the original you made and I think you helped give me advice on the one I made in January, although it wasn't quite as grand as yours! Can I ask how you joined the circle onto the cross?

Yes Sim, it is set into grooves routed into the rear of the cross and then blanking pieces were cut to replace the wood in the rear.

Nice job Mailee. Makes a change from all these doors hey?!!!

I wonder who makes all the coffins, is there special companies working on these nationally or are they made by random woodworkers round the country? I've heard they are often MDF these days, not sure if it's true?

Right, let's get back to more cheery subjects... :D

It used to be Yandles!

Their timber yard is where it is because of English Elm coffins. Until Dutch Elm disease in the 1960s/70s that was their main activity, and they were a very big supplier. I think the Elm crisis prompted a change of direction to the present business.
