I must be too. I'd say 30 quid for the wood, and a couple of hours work? It's going to move too, as chopping boards tend to get wet then dry etc. Made to order, 6 weeks... and furthermore you want end-grain on a chopping board, otherwise over time the surface grain breaks away. The bloke's a nutter, in my very humble opinion.
(bit vague on the provenance too... SE London? I've got some lace boards in my shop that came from within the Tower of London  )

some lace boards with some lacing on at that!

Yup! I show my passion every time I cut a square of wood. By the bye - I understood it was only called lacewood when quarter sawn? I suppose it sounds better than plane, though.

Not that Im saying that thats a bargain or anything but working backwards, the 80 quid will be the vat, it looks as it is being sold through a gallery so there will be at least 100% markup bringing the makers cut to well under £200, for a hand made to order chopping block which we all know will probably warp and split so the customer will want a replacement supplied free of charge and couriered to the other side of the earth, just as well the maker won't be swamped with orders.

That board may be london plane, but it's not lacewood. As Phil says, it's only lacewood when quarter-sawn and that piece is not QS. It wouldn't have that big arch in the grain if it were.

Is there a bricks and mortar gallery here? Or is it just a loose collection of items posted on a cool looking web site?

By the way, nothing stopping any of us doing exactly the same.

Yebbut maybe some twerp will pay £480 for it - that's good isn't it?
It means there's hope for you and me - we could undercut easily and knock them out for say £430.

And the answer to the question "am I missing something here?" is perhaps that a lot of people nowadays have a lot of money and nowhere sensible to spend it. We need high taxes and more redistribution of wealth - to get the economy going amongst other things.

Worth wandering through the links - have you seen this expensive bit of tat for instance?

Don't knock it - if you can't beat them join them!

Perhaps i'm missing something but i'd be embarrassed to put that price on it if it were mine..... :?
If one reads between the lines, it becomes clear that this particular chopping board has a particularly pleasant personality, and folk are prepared to dig deep for that....

We're doing something wrong lads. Are people actually paying these prices?

Graham - if they are (which I doubt, but...) then not for long. As proven here (above) there are a few of us could undercut him with ease (and deal with a few of the technical issues too, along the way!). The good old free market sorts 'anomalies' like this very quickly.

Yes you are missing something.
It makes no difference what you are selling marketing is the most important thing.
We could all make that cheaper but it is how you market it that will dictate the price.
