A post on the Old Tools list alerted this, and other, galoots to the online version of M. Diderot's encyclopedia this afternoon. This is a huge assembly of information on the arts, sciences etc published between 1751 and 1772 in France. Okay, don't yawn. It's absolutely stuffed with detailed engravings on all sorts of subjects, including woodworking of all varieties. Want to see what sort of benches the carpenter's used? Go here. Fancy a quick rundown of table leg styles in the mid-eighteenth century? Here you go. Veneering and marquetry?. Turning (now that's a lathe  ) and wood carving. There's lots more, you just need to know what to search for :?
Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but I hope someone might find it interesting
Cheers, Alf
P.S. You might also need something like this too, unless your French is pretty good...
