Hi

My question is in 2 parts

Firstly has anyone had their alloy wheels refurbished? I'm referring to kerbing damage here. How did they look afterwards, were you pleased with the results

Secondly the are loads of companies on the internet, including mobile ones and I don't know how to choose between them. Has anyone local (surrey/SW london) used anyone they would recommend

Regards
Mark

I'm interested in the answer to that as my alloys (fronts only) are losing pressure. The local ATS re-seal the beads from time to time, but it's a pain.

Had them done several times and using different methods.

Bead blasted & powder coated - a local firm charges £1 per inch (of diameter) and offers 2 different silvers and black. Come out very good, but the wheels have to be in good shape as the powder coating won't entirely hide surface defects.

Traditional method - done several this way. Use epoxy to build up\remove kerb rash and resprayed with wheel silver. Wurth do it in cans and it is a perfect match for the silver on BMW, Porsche, Mercedes and VAG silver alloys. It's a about £10 for both cans (paint & lacquer) and you could do just over a wheel with a set. Get someone else to do it (epsecially down south) & it will cost possibly more than the wheels are worth.

The following forum post gives the details,

as does this one,

Give it a go yourself. The problem with having someone else refurbish them is not only the cost, it takes the car off the road, but you need to get all 4 done or at least 2 on the same side, otherwise the slight diff in colour will show.

Had it done professionally through Micheldever Tyres (Hants) on my wife's Golf.
Had to leave the car with them for a few days
It was about 7 years ago - they came up really well, but after about 18 months the alloy "corrosion" started to creep back under the lacquer in a few small places!
They Guaranteed the treatment for 12 months!

****, I had that trouble on a previous car with tyres losing pressure. The tyre place kept re-sealing them without scraping off the old gunge first. I then took them somewhere else. They did the job properly by cleaning off all the old gunge from the rims and tyres before re-fitting and the problem was sorted.

Cheers

That was my problem, and the local ATS have done a reasonable job, but somehow the gunge comes back...
I have ended up having them done about once a year, although I could have them re-machined (at a cost) if I wanted. It's only the front wheels, though (big fwd Volvo - so I suppose it's the weight/torque/steering forces that do it).

I doubt you need anything that drastic  Just get them to remove all the old gunge from both the tyres and the rims.

Cheers

Hi,

I have a mate who is into that sort of stuff! I get him to do my car.
