I have noticed that the plastic handle on the stanley bench plane I bought about two years ago is a bit loose and tends to blister the hand after a while. So I've taken your advice and cancelled the order on the new stanley fore no.6 and have had a look at the sites which you suggested.
http://www.oldtools.co.uk has the three below, the first (recrord)looks in better condition (sorry haven't figured out how to upload pics yet) , can I assume that loss of japanning and laquer are of little consequence to the tools functioning? Do you think this company are reliable? Is an old record as good as an old stanley? They're all a good £30-35 cheaper than a new stanley , as you suggested, so which one should I get? Not to put you on the spot or anything, Cheers

A beech handled fore plane no 06 made in England by Record. Maintains a good length blade marked Record tungsten steel. The body maintains an estimated 98% of japanning. Outer body has some light pitting along with previous users initials RL. Front knob has some loss of lacquer to top of handle.

Stanley Fore Plane no 6
Fore plane no 6 by Stanley Bailey, this old woodworking plane was made in England , cutter is marked Stanley. This fore plane has beech handles that are un-lacquered, the body has some minor dents and an estimated 80% of original japanning intact, face plate has slight loss of nickel plating still a good old useable woodworking plane.
