Aldi wine

This evening I opened a bottle of red that I've not had before. Finca del Mar, really good.

I couldn't remember where I'd bought it, so I googled the name. Turns out it came from Aldi.

But before the Aldi results was a link to a resort called Finca del Mar in Spain. It's a naturist reserve, "2.4 km from Jardín de Cactus Gardens".

Not far enough away for me, matey.

About 6 months ago I bought the cheapest red Aldi had, for making rich gravy.
It was so nice it's the only red we drink at home since then and the only wine we buy from Aldi.
Grapevine merlot £3.69.

Never thought of adding wine to gravy, will have to try it sometime.

Once you've put a glug into the gravy you're obliged to finish the bottle before it goes off.

Wine can often be used in cooking - Rory Bremner years ago did a brilliant spoof of Keith Floyd making fish flavoured wine soup.

I don't understand why everyone doesn't make their own cider. It's easy, it's fun, it tastes way, way better than anything you can buy, and it is ludicrously cheap. You probably know someone who has apple trees in need of scrumping.

I find two 300litre barrels a year does me nicely. That's about 1200kg of apples, or thereabouts. Besides, you get to make a cider press, and a scratter - this is a woodworking forum, after all!

Do you have a blue bulbous hairy nose? Years ago I went to thatchers scrumpy brewery (before it got commercialised) all the workers got free scrumpy and as a result their noses had turned blue and hairy, I kid you not.

Aldi cheapo canned cider makes brilliant gravy to go with pork

I did a wonderful pork dish last week - I had four over ripe peaches that somehow got missed so I seared some shoulder steaks and put the peaches in a dish with salt and quite a lot of cayenne with the pork on top and baked it. Quick, simple and it was so nice I did it again this week.

I make perry once a year and shed ton of pear jam. the pear jam is a great way of storing the pears for future use in more obscure drinks including pear and berry cider.
for those without access to a tree, turbo cider is cheap and easy to make and can, if done well be amazing.

anyways, back to aldi wine, thanks for the heads up Steve, I shall pick up a bottle for this weekend. To return the favor, they sell a very nice Portuguese wine called Animus (white label with 2 stylised drawn people drinking on it), well worth a pop and cheap to boot.

Lidl Cimarosa for me. The Shiraz is my personal favourite but the Merlot, Pinotage and Cab Sauvignon are also very good.

In one country (Armagh) there's at least 250 commercial orchards that supports dozens of traditional and craft cider producers. On the island itself it's a massive industry. Tempted and Dan Kellys are two lovely ciders if you ever get the chance, both supplied by their own orchards near hand.

magners is the stuff I flush down the toilet after a night on proper cider.

If it's fizzy, you can see through it, or it's sweet it isn't cider. It's tart fuel.
