Cyprus has a militia army. Every male between the ages of 22 and 80 has his rifle and ammunition in his house. Multiple males in the house equals many rifles. A quarter of the population are legal shotgun owners (including me).
Our village has had three burglaries in the last 20 years, all on unoccupied holiday homes. A shotgun IS the best burglar deterrent.

I think you guys are missing my point. Of course it's an immediate response but it's not the response you want.
Think of the time and money spent for that call out. It's taking advantage of the situation in my opinion, and we should have more respect for these services.

Not sure anyone is missing the point tbh or seriously suggesting that a gun or amunition be used. I have one of those pneumatic guns, perfectly legal, that fires concrete nails into masonary and concrete using live caps, sounds exactly like a gunshot and could certainly do some serious harm but wouldn't dream of using it as an anti burglar device.

I think the real point which no-one has missed is that burglar alarms are usually worse than useless.

cheers
Bob

PS, my point about the armed response unit was that they failed to use common sense. I've lived in the house for 30 years and they had all details of a non operational rusty old firearm, the information came from myself and I gave details of my next door DCI and the retired firearms instructor directly opposite, both known to them. Those same neighbours were highly critical of the action when I later told them.

If the response you require is, ''take a crime reference number but don't hold your breath'', then crack on with your cameras & flashy lights. End of the day, your tools are still gone.

If you're prepared to let someone take your gear and then rely on the cops to get it back for you, well... good luck with that.

I offered a perfectly legal and very effective way of deterring criminals, yet the idea was rubbished here.

I'll just wait for the sympathy thread that is inevitable when your DeWalts go DeWalkies. :-D

Naz - Thanks for the suggestion of alarm mines. My nearest neighbour is a farm 1/4 mile away, so there's no danger of worrying nosey townies! Providing they're legal I'm seriously considering them for my garage and shed.

If you live in the middle of nowhere, then fair enough. But advising someone in a built area to be firing gun blanks as a deterrent is a bit silly. It's already been mentioned how often these things accidently go off.

God help us if it catches on.
