i have an aldi 2.5HP compressor and the oil level had gone down a little bit after some time of use.

in the instruction manual did'nt seem to state what sort of oil it uses.. anyone have any idea?!

I was in my local Halfords last night and they had both air tool and compressor oil at about £5/litre IIRC.

oh is there a specific code of oil or are they the same?

like car engine oils there are 0w/50, 5w/50, 15w/50 etc..

There are.. I believe you want SAE30 or SAE40 oil for direct drive compressors. SAE40 is the thicker/more viscous of the two. Thinner oils have a water-like consistency and pour more easily at low temperatures than heavier, thicker oils that have a more honey-like consistency. Thin is good for easier cold weather starting and reducing friction, while thick is better for maintaining film strength and oil pressure at high temperatures and loads.

The 'Compressor Oil' you can buy in the shops is almost certainly all SAE30... Air Tool Oil is very thin/runny, probably something like SAE10

just checked the sealey web page and found the compressor oil £4.98 Incl VAT
- thats what I bought from halfords last time.
