Hi All,

I'm looking at sorting out an Axminster M900 lathe together with a 4 jaw chuck, 6 sorby chisels and a load of blanks. The guy is asking £250. Is this too much? I've seen M950 lathes go for less but not often so close to home (always need to take into account fuel costs).

I'm taking a look tonight so advice asap would be appreciated.

Seems a good deal to me if all in ok nick and depending on type of chuck.

I sold my M900 and Record RP4000 for about £230 but no tools or timber.

I would avoid the chucks with loads of elastic bands (record RP3000 IIRC) but otherwise sounds a good deal.

Well I went round to have a look and it seemed in good nick. The sorby chisels were brand new and unused. There were also quite a number of extra chisels. The chuck is a vicmarc and seems quite good (tell me if you think otherwise). A number of books and blanks sealed the deal. Now I've just got to find some space for it and get it out the back of the car.

Not quite the M950 I was hoping for but I'm still very chuffed.

You have had a top deal.

The chisels are approx £100 new for the Sorby's alone.

The Chuck (and an excellent one at that) is probably approx £140 depending on model and jaw set. I have a Vicmarc chuck and it will take anything you can throw at it. Phil Irons is the UK importer if you need any advice / parts.

That technically makes the lathe and other materials free. Personally I would not worry too much about the 900 / 950. You can swivel the headstock on both so there really isn't that much difference in capacity.

I would advise, if it has not already been done, you fit a shelf in the stand for additional bracing and I built a 'pocket' below the shelf that I put concrete blocks in to add weight as the stand, whilst holding the unit off the floor, does not to much to add the mass needed to absorb vibration.

Anyway, I think you have had a top deal - I wish I found it rather than buying my stuff new!

Good luck

Well done on the deal. Buying used tools like this means that someone else has taken the vast majority of the devaluation, unfortunate for them but not for you. In fact this is how I justify my tool purchases ie. I'll get all or the majority of my money back if or when I sell them . . . so they have cost me nothing :? trouble is I rarely sell them
