Hello gents!

I need to replace some of the architraving round the doors in my house (in Leeds), and want to get pitch pine cut to match. I understand that the most cost effective way is to get the cutting tool made to match the design, and then hang on to it, but what is it exactly that I need to buy (aside from the timber, of course)?

I need quite a lot of timber cut, as a previous occupier, who was also an avid but awful DIY-er saw fit to replace some architraving with more modern timber in a design that doesn't match, and which stands out even like a sore thumb now I've stripped all the paint off.

I've googled for tooling in Leeds and somehow found this website, so as there's probably someone out there that can advise me further I thought I'd ask.

Thank you in advance,
Lucy

PS Apologies if this post is in the wrong place!!

What profile is it, can you draw around the cross section?

Yes you could have a knife cut to the profile and keep it, but unless you have a spindle moulder it won't much use. LOL

Best thing would be to post a pic/ profile on here as there might be a supplier of that profile. Also check for local joinery shops / timber merchants as they might be able to help with the machining. In fact they might already have the knife profile if there are quite a few historic houses left in the area. :)

Pitch pine may take some finding too- would a reclamation yard be worth looking at for either the architrave or for a church pew to teals the timber. There is a website called salvoweb which I found interesting- a collection of yards advertising their wares in a single place.

Pop a picture up of the architrave, im sure someone will have made something similar!

If its a 'big' cut and quite elaborate, a set of cutters for my 100mm profile block is around £100 iirc. Then obviously cost to Par and mould. Ususally charge 1.50p/m for PAR and a single moulding pass.30p per m for each additional cut. (Depending on quantity) it would be cheaper for a large amount as its fairer to work on an hourly rate Imo. (Plus cutters if i dont have them)
