I might be making some. I seem to remember that they were often made out of square to compensate for the inevitable sag their weight would cause.

Does anyone know of this and how much out of square they should be?

Cheers

...How big is a barn door? :? :)

I've made framed gates in the past that were as big as 2.1m x 2.1m, 70mm thick frames with T&G cladding and they were always fitted "normally". We rarely agreed to make anything bigger than this because they would inevitably sag.

A friend of mine has a 300 year old barn with the original doors still in place, and they are a pair each 7'-6" wide and 20 feet high.

Mike’s about right with that size.

I've looked in Ellis' Joinery but can't find anything big enough. 'Farm joinery' is perhaps a bit base for him.

Would be interested to know of any sources though. Going to have a look in Village Carpenter next
