Advertising in F&C

Hi Guy's,

I'm a new member of this forum after a friend of mine told me about it. I'm a member of a couple of other forums already so I've seen some of your names pop up before!

So my question....

I'm a professional woodturner based in Leicester an am considering advertising my services in F&C magazine, however, after reading several posts here on this forum, it seems quite a few members aren't too impressed with F&C these days and indeed don't even read it any more :shock: !

So I wondered: Does anyone think it would be worth spending my money on an advert?, Does anyone have experience of advertising with F&C? Any thoughts on the matter would be welcome,

Who would you be advertising to? Customers? Would they be reading a furniture making magazine?

I don't know how much F&C charge, but I'd guess it's not cheap. Having looked at your website, whilst you invite commissions I'd have thought the only stuff you'd pick up at F&C are production enquiries at production prices.

Far better I'd have thought to spend an advertising budget, if you have one - on targetting perhaps a local well heeled audience - is there a 'glossy County' magazine in your area that could be talked into doing a small spread in return for some advertising bookings?

Or perhaps spend the budget with an internet company who can promote and fine tune your website.

My thoughts anyway,

Welcome to the forum Richard, have seen you elsewhere on the net, I tend to go along with the comments about advertising in any wood magazine as you are basically trying to sell yourself to the converted so to speak, I too think money would be better spent spread around the counties and on getting your products and services more prominently exposed to the web search engines.

Thanks for your responses. My thought patern when thinking of advertising in F&C was that it is read by furniture makers and I have an interest in turning for furniture. I thought to advertise my woodturning services, ie turning one offs, pairs, sets or small production runs of furniture parts or parts for restorers etc. I though F&C might be the perfect place for this but maybe not...?

I also wondered if people generally read the adds at the back of the magazine, or is it just me ?

I think most of the others have assumed you were wanting to sell finished items to the public.

If you are offering a service to other makers who are unable to do the work themselves then that would make more sense. Cant say I've seen many other services like that in F&C and I've got almost all of them

That's what I was thinking. I've bought a few copies recently and, as you say, haven't seen any similar adverts. So a good idea or not???

I think I'll enquire at the cost and perhaps go from there.

I think it'll all depend on the price - it will take some months to get awareness as well. I suppose it also depends on your pricing too. My thought is that the return on investment may be a close run thing but worth exploring.

Got to agree with Wizer, in F&C you're more likely to be advertising to competitors than customers.

Welcome to the forum.

I don't read this particular mag myself, but as far as advertising generally is concerned, ask your self a couple of questions:

"If no one else is advertising the same service as you, then why not? Has it been tried before and failed?"

Might be worth seeing if you can find a publication that advertises the same as you are planning and monitor those ads, ie are they one offs or are they regular? Regular ads generally mean they are working.
