Some stunning stuff.

I like his philosophy re. "No bad wood" and his use of domestic woods.

Lots of fabulous timber but how many varieties have we over here?

Using bent and cracked timber and incorporating knots - great ideas? :)

Thanks for the link Wizer - some excellent pieces and gilpin's interview is really interesting. Out of all the images though the one that made me 'nod' in appreciation was the last one with the round tabletop where he had incorporated the whole shape of the knot rather than cut through - simple yet very impressive.

yes that stuck with me Dave. But some of the figuring in the various species of wood amazed me.

I wonder if, using his ethos, we would find similar delights in our native woods.

Me too!! That was amazing and something I will be thinking about next time I find a "fault" in a piece of wood....

Excellent Tom...great link...

"...but how many varieties have we over here?"

Rod,

I wondered that about Ireland when I was feeling jealous of every other country and their seemingly endless variety of woods so I did a search and was shocked to discover there are over 2860 different varieties of tree here.

Next question was...where are they all?

Off topic a little but

This is the reason i wanted a wood forum in here, so much information to be had under one roof. not just for species but all aspects of Wood/timber, where to get it, cutting your own and everything in between.

I love scavaging and recycling wood.

Thx very much Wizer for the link, it'll make me have a look at more local woods.

It's great to see such passionate people who have such a beautiful way of looking at this lovely material.

Also enjoyed that Tom, made me realise I should make more out of my FWW subscription, it's a great resource
