Well this is actually my first bowl that has gone completely to plan. No problems at all with this one. Very Enjoyable.

The only slight let down is the finish. It's got a kind of milky colour to it in some lights. I used a CEL SS and Woodwax22.

I was eager to turn this blank that I got from S&B as it's the first time I'd used walnut. It was nice to turn and the smell of walnut is like food ;)

I also had a go at my first box. Turned from an offcut of oak that's been in the workshop a couple of years.

I'm very pleased with this. I wasn't concentrating on shape, more the technicalities of box turning. It turned quite well. The lid is a pleasing suction fit. I still have a lot to learn about hollowing with the spindle gouge and keeping the walls perfectly even.

I used the 2 tenon method and hollowed the lid a little. The lid was meant to be just flat across with a small rounded top, but I went too deep with the hollowing, so had to incorporate it with a domed top. I think it works quite well. Finished with Osmo PolyX.

Cheers George.

yes, certain. I have a workshop full of it.

I 99% certain it's Oak. I bought a load of it from a guy who only sold Oak. It works and smells like Oak. Tho, I do see what you mean, the fleck pattern looks like beech :-k

Tom,

Well done, nice finish on both.
Show us the end grain of the box, picture of the bottom, its does look like beech but the end grain may help solve the question.

Hi Tom,
Well done, the bowl looks fine but I can see what you mean about the milky look is it possibly a reaction between the cellulose sanding sealer and the woodwax 22. Did you let the cellulose fully dry?
I certainly like the box as well, whatever the timber may be.
Keep up the good work,
Regards,
Ian

Good job on both Tom,
The box very clean lines well finished.
The bowl, simple lines, functional I rather like Walnut, it has a nice feel to it. Know what I mean?
How big is it?
What are you going to use it for?

At last tom, well done. I must admit, i dont recognize a lot of woods, but i would have guessed at beech too.
keep up the good work..

I like the simple shape of your walnut bowl Wizer (isn't walnut a nice wood to work with?)

Excellent first box, too. I like the domed shape of the lid. What size is it? As to the wood, if you hadn't said it was oak, I too would have thought it was beech - the pinkish colour and the flecks seem more beech-like than oak-like to me. Having said that, I have just got hold of some logs of red oak (not turned any as yet) and that has a pinkisk tinge to it.

** Isn't it fun when you type out a lengthy reply and then the browser crashes?

The walnut bowl is roughly 8" in diameter and 3" tall. It's possible that the CEL SS and Wax has reacted and caused the milky appearance. I'll have to experiment on the next piece. I have no idea what it will be used for. Probably eventually be given to some unsuspecting person on their birthday\xmas.

The box is roughly 3" round and 5" tall. It has no specific use intended. I was really just trying to get my head around the box making process. In fact I didn't think it would come out so well. I will probably give it to my daughter to play with. She has a surprising obsession for wood (for an 18month old). I always show her each piece and she seems to give an opinion, I think she'll become my best critic. ;)

Moving forward I think I'll give bowls a rest. My father is getting married in 6 weeks and I've been commissioned to make a ring box. I'd also like to make them a platter to commemorate the day (Third time lucky  )

Thanks all for your comments. It makes it worth it to get positive comments from my peers.

Very well done on your box !

Great grain alignment, and the grooves either side of the join are very neat !

Exquisite work. The box is beech with some delightful discolouration, nice elegant styling and what looks like engineering level precision on the lid. Also the walnut bowl has wonderful two tone contrast of the heart and sapwood and and a nice pleasing classic tactile shape.

Waahaayy ! brilliant Tom ... great pieces, Both.
Thats really fast progress ... much to be happy with yourself about, there.

Love them both... and the finishes look pretty good from those pics ...
You've done a great job on both of them.

( PS.. I'd have gone for Beech too ! ... if seeing the photo only ! )

Well Done That man !
