Having just manged to get to the local boot fair between showers looking for the elusive Record 5 1/2 I did manage to get one bevel-edge chisel for 10p.

Covered in several layers of paint and putty, I could just make out the word 'Sweden' on the paper label, so thought it was worth a punt. Turns out to be an Erik Anton Berg 22mm, which a quick Google tells me are fetching $40 in Australia. Are they thought of here?

Good steel, nice chisels. I have a plastic handled one (that I now see I was robbed in paying a whole 20p for) and despite my usual abhorrence for plastic handles I see no likelihood of relinquishing ownership of it any time soon. Worst comes to worst, 10p isn't too bad for a paint tin opener anyway...

Bergs are nice chisels - they ended up as Bahco 1031's (same factory, same blokes making them, new name, streets ahead of the normal Bahcos).

I've got an original Berg one with a birch root handle that a friend gave me. It has become my 'lending chisel'. It does take a great edge if you polish it but I just linish out the dings when it comes back and it's all ready for the next "hey Matt have you got a chisel I can borrow please?" "Sure, by all means, how about this one, please be careful with it though it's a collectors item."

More dings - more linishing - "Hey Matt" - "Sure" repeat ad infinitum.

It has saved my AI's and Fujikawas from a world of abusive behaviour.
