A very bad day!!

Last Wednesday I was just putting the last tools in the van after finishing fitting the sound proof doors, this was in woodford east London, in a ten minute window some bar stewards got in my 12plate VW transporter and cleared out all my tools, something to the tune of £3.5k and im having quotes like £1.5 for repairing the damage!

So in that short time someone took my livelihood from me and set me back £5k probably for a return of £500

you can see below the small hole it took to gain access, why van manufactures are not swinging from the gallows for making such un-secure vehicles i don't know!!!

At the time i felt like giving up and getting an office job or something, but over the last few days I have realised that would let the sh^t heads win! When i realised what had happened i felt like when i lost my dad 5 years ago!

Oh what bad luck, some scum out there. Hope things work out for you.
Obviously keep an eye out for where they might try to offload stuff, Gumtree, Ebays etc, perhaps any 2nd hand tool shops. They are probably dumb enough to try sell various stuff of yours at same time, so easier to recognize yours.
What about Van, contents insurance?

12 years ago the adjoining business caught fire and burnt to the ground taking ours with it. We lost about £30K and had to start again. At the time it's so gut wrenching but you can bounce back and move on up. The real key to it, is not to let the anger and resentment at the culprits eat you up. Forget it and move on, resentments will just destroy you.

So sorry for you adidat,

Nothing worse than taking something that allows someone to make a living. As you say will be sold on for next to nothing without any consideration of the damage it causes not only to you but your family as well. As has been mentioned previously in another post there is a petition on change.org calling for tougher sentences for those caught stealing tools. Whilst I am not convinced this will deter people if it raises the awareness of what seems to be a growing problem then it can only be for the good.

Hope the a holes who did this have a slow horrible and painful death. I wonder if it's known to thieves that the type of van is an easy target ? Is there a way you can reinforce the door, perhaps some stainless chequer plate so it's a little harder for the *******s to try again ? Like you said, pi5s poor effort from the manufacturer if that's all it takes.

Thanks guys. It's rife in London, lots of mates and colleagues get done, I think the way to stop it is going around the markets and arresting and confiscation of anyone selling large amounts of high end power tools. I was at Vauxhall market a few weeks ago, and the amount of festool there was unreal.

I have a £450 excess on the van and protected no claims bonus. And should be able to get about £1500 worth of tools back from festool for £400 excess which my uncle has very kindly covered.

But all the more expensive stuff had run out of warranty ts55, 1400 router, and rotex 150

Look into Smartwater - at least your stuff is identifiable, and you might even get a discount on your insurance. Do all it takes it to make your van less attractive than someone else's.

I feel for you.
I lost about 12K of stuff by theft. Uninsured, too late to track by the time the theft was discovered, absolutely heartbreaking.
But I have survived, just, and am rebuilding. I just hope I don't catch the next culprits, because if I do, I shall spend the rest of my life in jail. They do not understand what grief they cause.

Perhaps trade organisations could form a type of cooperative insurance fund for trades people for this sort of instance, and get back hanging for the culprits.

I don't know what to say either, except that I am very sympathetic. We have been burgled, twice, and it's not just the losses that are tough, it's what it does to you emotionally.

Obviously I hope you get things back on track soon.

FWIW, which may be 'not much', the Federation of Small Business does run an insurance scheme, which might offer cover in the future. I am no longer a member, so can't look it up, but membership for me used to be around 100 per year, for which you get to use the logo etc. It all depends on your circumstances, obviously.

Many of the vans I see around here that are likely to be carrying tools have what look like giant hasp and staples with fist sized padlocks on the back doors.
