it absolutly must have two things

an adjustable mouth/throat

the cap iron must be tightened with a screw not a lever (like my stanley)

quality is the criteria but it has to be currently in production, not a custom made one off

sounds like id better be a bit more specific

ive seen a lie-nielson am i missing any other GOOD makes

dirtydeeds, have a read of the veritas review linked in the sticky from Alf - very good reading and may help your choice.

Stay away from Groz - they are garbage.

One thing I've often noticed is that people with larger hands tend to like the Veritas, while people with smaller/medium-sized hands often prefer the Lie-Nielsens. That's obviously not data from a scientific study. The best thing to do is to try them both out if you can. I (actually my medium-sized hands) wouldn't part with my LN 9 1/2 for anything.

You can really see it here in its elements. Taking actual shavings of end grain from a butt joint.

Thanks, I thought I was missing something - but maybe not.

Assume the low angle cuts end grain better?
I have one (that I use for trim jobs) -Record I think.
Also have another that seems to have a blade angle adjustment (as well as an adjustable sole).
I've never used the latter and wondered what its advantages were over the former.

I "inherited" a pile of kit and am trying to identify correct use of some of the more "exotic", so am appraching tools from the opposite direct to most people.

Post some photos! The effort of taking/getting the pictures online will be worth it for the instant identification, tips, analysis you'll get on here.

The Lie Nielsen (LN) block planes meet all your requirements, particulalry the quality issue

Tom !

Though I swear by my U.S. Stanley 60 1/2 with Ron Hock blade, as a working joiner I'd go for the Veritas.

See you over on TT..... :D

Mike.

I'd go for the Veritas also...I like the modern design, I like the precision offered and I like the feel. For me better than the LN...even with my medium size hands.
