Today a neighbour came around and said "do you want these" ?
I'd like your comments on how to clean these up. I would normally use "0000" wire wool and white spirits. Should I strip the handles back to bare wood and re- varnish or do you have any other suggestions.
A Record 5 1/2 plane

A rosewood (I think) Mortice gauge

A Record 044 Plough plane

Its been welded and has a missing a depth stop and a 1/4" blade.

Well the repair is neat and you have the blade clamp, the bit that gets lost and is hard to find, but that is not the correct blade, look at this picture of Phillys #044

I would strip the handles to bare wood, stain (I think they're already stained beech), and use an oil finish.

Schultzy,
Very nice haul, but don't p**s about with the 044 body, send me your address and I'll send you a spare body that I have lying about, you pay the postage, fair?

DaveL, I did what you said and asked him if he had any more and I got a shock. Today he bought around 2no. 4' "T" bar cramps, a record 051 spokeshave, 2 stanley No.4 planes; one plane stamped made in England and one USA(which is 1/4" shorter), 2 tenon saws and a saw tooth setter. The story goes that his father had died and the brothers had taken all they wanted and these were left over.

bugbear, thanks, I will peruse and digest.

mahking51, thanks for your kind offer. As I don't think I will be using this one very much it might be better if you gave it to someone who might use it more.

You jammy so and so! All I can say is that I think your name can safely be added to the list of collectors. Well done - enjoy your hoard!

Steve

Not at all envious :^o
