hello all, i normally buy my beech green and spalt them myself but a couple of weeks ago i bought some two year old logs which had been laid up in the woods over winter due to it being too wet to get them out then when they could get them out they were unsuitable to sell to there normal market and so got left :D

the spalting isnt full on yet but with a little help from me it will be for this winters turning session. \:D/

Await with anticipation to see the conclusion of the saga, so much hangs on the will of nature even at this late stage in the trees life.

Lucky ******! I've got a bit of beech, but can't get hold of spalted for love nor money. Well done.

If it's too much, and you want to share some, gi's a bell.

Bung it in a bin bag with a pile of leaf mould for a month or two. Works for me anyway

Mornin' Pete, already got five pieces in bags to try and spalt. Have done lots of small pieces in the past, but these five are about 14" square x 4" thick. don't know if it will work well on this size. To get into the heart of the block that is, before it rots on the outside.

splating is all about patience but you can help
when you get the fresh logs nik them with your chainsaw in a few places just enough to through the cambium layer.
Then you want to create a warm- humid- wet conditions you dont want direct sun and lots of air flow.
heres some pics of what i do
my log store with greenhouse shade netting over it

under the dust sheets- any sheets work ideally try to find some hesian sacks. this photo shows a log i cut but i wasnt happy with the markins so i'll leave it like this for a bit longer.

normally i stack two high. i put some shavings down first then the first log then more shavings then the second log then more shavings followed by a cap- creating a log/ shavings sandwich. ideally the shavings will be from a spalted beech log and i water them with liguid plant food as i stack.

Cornucopia,

I quite like the contrast between the spalted and unspalted wood, such as you have in those logs. I recently cut up a few pieces which were similarly bits of fresh wood and pits spalted. I tend to dry mine before use so it will be next year before I start to get aroud to any of it, but I'm looking forward to it already.

Personally I think it's great that you have posted so many pics, I just never seem to get the camera out.

Cheers,

Dod

Cor blimey cor blimey cor blimey and Bejazzus that is some piece of work. I'snt Moi lucky to have landed in this forum. I call her self in and tell her this is what she will be getting as soon as I get up and running. Keep the pictures coming also about the lenth of time you have to wait until everything is ready. REgards Boysie :D :D :D

the length of time is a bit hit and miss, from fresh logs, its at least 18 months, the last batch of logs i had i staretd getting good reults at about 2 years but i was still turning from that same batch at nearly 3 years, the wood in places had gone slightly soft/punky but very sharp tools and somtimes a bit of ca glue sorts it.
the trick is to take a slice of the end grain and check on progress.

Corny-- Keep the piccys coming... Your work is an inspiration !

RE: Spalting --- I was told ( and have subsequently tried with good results ) that you can get practically any wood to spalt, within reason... and to 'encourage' the process... as Bodrighy Pete says, into a bag with your log / blank - and add some vinegar and the shavings & sawdust from a bit of spalted beech already turned, and Hey presto.. a wee while down the line, your 'new' spalted blank will appear !
The longer you leave it, the more spalting occurs.

Tam, if you cant get any for love nor money and want a blank or two, PM and I'll pick you up a bit from the guy I get all my blanks from.. he's always got loads and I can easy send you a bit, not a problem at all !

8) :D
