What size is your roughing gouge Tom? When you use it if you present it bevel first then tip into the wood keeping it at about 45 degrees so that you are shaving a bit off with each pass. I have never taken corners off with a saw and find as long as I take the ends off first on a spindle it works OK.

knock it to hexagonal or octagonal with a chainsaw or sabre saw first - saves time and mess.

We have a tool that does this for us in a fraction of the time it takes to mess around with a bandsaw/table saw (not to mention the risk to fingers), it's called a roughing gouge!!!!

It will be splintery and lumpy to begin with but it soon calms down once you get rid of the corners.

I like the lamp though Tom. Good shape, nice flowing curves. Very good indeed =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

I really like the finish you've achieved as well. Looks almost ceramic (that is a complement, honest!!!)

Cheers,

I really can't remember what size the roughing gouge is, will check tomorrow. I do use that technique Pete, it just wasn't fun knocking the corners off a 7" square block.

Rich, I've been having fun with colouring lately. It's not that I don't love the natural figure and texture of wood, but I don't think that I should be restricted by it. The finish looks really good when it's alight. The red tones really seem to give it depth. I want to play with other colours next, but black and red is something of an obsession for me. I even have those colours permanently etched on my body

I'm not a big fan of colouring wood but I really like the contrast of black with pale woods like Maple and Sycamore. Black and red can really look stunning when done well. As I said, I really like what you've done with the lamp. I've not had any experience with Balua (?) so not sure how it looks "au naturale"

Tracey Owen made a textured rimmed bowl with black edges fading into red and back to black in a back issue of WT which I am particularly fond of. A bit of airbrushing in that case I believe.
