I finished this before the weekend, it was on the lathe for a while while I applied each coat of colour and lacquer.

The wood is Yellow Balau and it was first coloured with black spirit dye, then red spray paint, then black spray paint. It then had 4 coats of satin lacquer over 4 days. Finishing took a week in total! The pictures don't pick it up too well but it's got an interesting black\red effect to it. It's about 5 inches at it's widest point.

I'm dead pleased with it and so was wifey!! ;)

nice - did you bore through on the lathe - or did you use a drill press before turning ?

oh forgot about that bit. Neither. The wood is actually laminated, so I routed a groove in the 2 pieces before glue up. This then became the area for the drive centre to sit in. Worked really well. The lamp holder is from TR and I'm not impressed. Yet again they fail to send instructions with their products. In the end I epoxied it into a hole, but I'm sure that's not how it's supposed to go.

I have secret plans for another one Rich ;)

Tom this is just great, i really like the way you went about getting there and its looks amazing, for want of a better phrase " it has all the curves in the right places" well done mate..

thanks Steve. Waiting for wifey to pick a lampshade for it. It's probably going to end up being a present for SIL.

HI Tom

The lamp has turned out beutifully.

Unfortunatlly a lot of things like this come without instructions.

There are two ways, or rather with your way 3, of fixing the holder in the first is a brass mounting plate which fits into a shallow 1" hole in the top the second is a brass nipple which screws into the central bore and the holder is then screwed onto it.

Both can be seen on THIS PAGE from Axminster.

The reason they are sold seperatlly is that there is a wide range of things the holder can be attached to.

Another option is THIS KIT which gives you everything you need to wire a lamp.

Thanks John. I went with TR because they where only turners supply store that had chrome lamp holders. I couldn't see anywhere on their site that you needed to use those extra fittings, but I did assume it'd be a 'solution'. That's why I went to TR instead of B&Q which sell the same fitting for the same price (inc postage).

You live and learn. I don't think I'll bother with TR again sadly.

Hi Tom,
That a fine curvy figure you got there and I like the colour too!
I wondered at first what the darker lines were in the second photo but now I have read the explanation of the lamination I can now understand.
Very nice result, keep up the good work!!
Regards,
Ian

See you are progressing 8)

Did you draw it out first to get the shape you wanted ?

Looking good mate 8)

Thank you Master ;)

Yep fully researched and drawn out.

Thanks everyone, I'm really quite proud of it. I'm eager to turn another. Roughing down the square laminated blank was no fun tho, lots and lots of mess

knock it to hexagonal or octagonal with a chainsaw or sabre saw first - saves time and mess.

yeh I miss the TS. I could have done it on the bandsaw but it'd have either meant a bit of jiggery pokery or adjusting the table. I didn't do either mainly because I'm lazy but I also didn't want to muck about with the table as it's set very nicely.

Could do with a larger roughing gouge really. Another item on the wish list.
