To all who brought along toys and/or expertise to Dan's bash I would like to say many thanks. I would also like personally, to single out Shultzy & Steve Maskery for their help with Sketchup.

Most of all though I would like to offer a big vote of thanks to Dan for hosting today's bash at his workshop. Thanks Dan, it's been a great day, only question now is:

When's the next one... :?: :)

regards

Brian

I will second that Brian. I really enjoyed the day at Dan's place and learned a lot in the process. It was nice to meet the names we see daily on here and put faces to them. Sorry there wasn't a demonstration of spray painting but it would have taken some setting up. Still there was plenty going on and much to chat about in between downing fish and chips and doughnuts. Thanks very much Dan and the rest of the guys who demo'd there talents. :D

And I will third it, it was nice to see a few new faces and a few "old" ones as well. A big thanks to Duncan and I hope the "siphoning off" of his knowledge by most hasn't drained him. I think a great time was had by all.

Well after missing my train again, I've just got in. Long old day but worth it. Good fun and great to meet our friends in the North.

Here are some pics of the day:

Thanks for being host for the day Dan. Hope to do it again some time.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for posting those pics. I can recognise a few of the people, such as Steve, Trim, MarkW and Dan, but not all. Can you say who's who?

Cheers

Paul

:D I'll let people introduce themselves. In case they want to stay anonymous to hide their tool obsessions from their significant others.

definite Big Thanks to Dan Tovey for hosting the gig. This was my first one so i wasn't sure what to expect but it was definitely a good day and well worth going - just like-minded people hanging around, chatting a sharing ideas...or soaking up ideas in my case ! !.

Although i must admit i was DYING to leave once i had pur-chased my LN 5 1/2 Jack and LN Low Angle Smooter. Needless to say i have already been in the shed and tried them out (much to the annoyance of the Fun Prevention Officer) and they work a treat - i just wave it at the stock and the shavings jump off ! !

Wizer, i'm guessing you had no problems with the Watforg Gap Border Patrol...even though you didn't have your Passport

Dan, than you for your most excellent hospitlity. A most excellent day, great to meet up with other woodies, I spend far too much time on my own.

Thank you also to all those who parted with hard-earned cash; if you email me I'll send yo a proper invoice for your accounts.

Good chippy wasn't it?

Paul - I'm the one to the right of the guy with the red coat on in the "Tool Table" piccy - god I look depressed. Mind you, Steve was going some.....

Good day out. Nice to see other forum members.

Cheers

Very very enjoyable day out. Not much more I can add to that, except thanks Dan for making everyone welcome

I am in the fourth picture down with the grey top and my arms folded (wearing glasses) laughing at Dan trying to work out where you plug in the rebate plane. Hmm, looks like the slippery slope to the darkside to me.

Looks like a great day was had by all...I can see that Dan's clearly sliding on his way down now - Rob

I have to confess to being totally seduced by the beauty and feel of these top-end bits of kit. They really are fantastic pieces of engineering and design. I'd be tempted to buy a couple for that alone.

Thing is though, I'm still not sure I'd ever actually use them.

Or have I not grasped the ethos of Lie Nielson ownership? Are they meant simply to be fondled, sharpened, polished, and then put back in their rosewood cabinet?

I think if you got hold of a couple you'd use them somewhere on a project (but hopefully not on site  ) If you wanted an introduction to LV or LN ownership, one of their small block planes is a good place to start as they're infinitely better than the standard Record or Stanley offerings and is the sort of plane that has myriad uses around the 'shop and won't break the piggy bank either - Rob

I think you'd certainly make use of a good block plane. If you ever work on a hardwood with tearout, then a smoother may help. I saw some old spokeshaves hanging around your workshop (for decoration?) A good'n will help you smooth out curves with much less dust than the sander.

But you're right. If you're not going to use them in your work then you should only buy them if you'd like to collect. Or, indeed, if you'd like to make some hand made items in your spare time for yourself.

Swmbo just looked at the pics of get together, her comment was....

"They dressed for the occasion then"

I think she was having a pop at me  cos it appears we all have the same taste in clothes, jeans, tee shirts, fleece & caps, anyone of which I have in my wardrobe.

When she really is p*ssed of with me her normal comment is

" Your not going out looking like that are you? "

Any way it looks as if a good day was had by all, I really wish I didn't live so far away I would have liked to of joined you all. :)
