Hi folks,

I know the Forum is for woodwork. but I am sure many of us read fiction now and again. If you like thrillers-action novels have a look at this site.

You might be aware, I indulge in a spot of writing. Recently I entered a short story contest at another author’s site.

The brief was to write a short story in the style of Matt Hilton and his protagonist, Joe Hunter. The voting has been in progress all week with two more days to arrive at a short list of three.

As the idea of the competition is to promote Matt Hilton's latest novel, entrants were encouraged to spread the news. If you’d like to read a selection of stories in the genre, they are just a mouse-click or two away.

In fairness, you’ll have to guess which one is mine, although I’m sure you won’t have a clue.

Jack Reacher - the bulletproof, bare knuckle champion, crime and terrorism solver extrordiaire. Weapons and munitions expert, and deflowerer of virgins in every novel! Every man wants to be him, every woman wants to be with him. Never seen a description of him picking up a chisel though, so don't rate him personally :wink: Got a bit disinterested in the last novel to be honest, foiling Afghan terror cells in the US, and the write-up for the next one doesn't fill me with excitement.

Best of luck with your entry, hope you can avoid the cheese of the Reacher syndrome where every story has to outdo the last in terms of bravery, heroism and feats of daring-do. Tom Clancy had the same problem with his main protagonist Jack Ryan - once he had made him President of the USA I kind of lost interest. The early novels were good though.

a winged superhero, clad in black rubber and navy blue kevlar and although more camp than larry Grayson-can save the world.

I liked the early jack reachers - the first two (killing floor and die trying) were excellent. the third (tripwire) was okay , while the fourth (the visitor) was excreable - he then had a return to form with echo burning, but nose dived there after with persuader - "without fail" was okay , but thereafter all the later ones have been competing for the title of worst lee child thus far (imo "the hard way" was the worst but its a close call) - to the point at which i have lost interest and havent bought the last two

similarly with joe hunter - dead mens dust started well, went swiftly down hill and i lost interest before the end with no intention of buying the sequel

for my money for that kind of action book you have to go a long way to do better than barry eisler and his hero john rain., even after 6 books (rain fall, blood from blood, choke point, one last kill, the last assasin, and requiem for an assasin) the writing and plot is still as tight as it was in his first one.
