A friend of mine kindly gave me some odd bits of timber recently, as if I needed any more, but would have been churlish to refuse
These were old manky looking bits of something that have been used at a gearbox manufacturer when casting the gearbox casings, the timber being used as various sized/shaped plugs in the sand moulds, so really grubby and was in two minds whether to add them to the firewood pile.
The weight of them made stop though and stuck one on the lathe to tidy it up and see what was there.......
The piece on the right is how they all came, the ones on the left given a quick spin and tidy up on the lathe. Some kind of hardwood, possibly the dreaded iroko again  or something similar, but well worth keeping and using, and best thing is he reckons there are loads of them to get rid of and is going to bring me another pile or two back from work
Decided not to spend twenty quid or so on a nice carvers mallet to use with my LN chisels and turned up a couple on the lathe instead using some of the blanks.......
The one on the left was made all in one piece and utilised the taper on the blank (as above) rather nicely, and is just the right size and heft, being suprisingly heavy and dense.
The one on the right is probably a bit too large and heavy. I turned up a piece of what I think is hawthorn for the head and used a length of the unknown hardwood for a through handle, wedged with a bit of oak in the end for good measure.
Probably use this one for belting the larger 1" chisel or some of the pig stickers  8)
Couple of coats of Danish on each and the hardwood came up beautifully, well chuffed having saved a few quid and had some fun as well.
Not sure I need any more mallets though so will have to figure what else I can do with the rest and any more blanks that might come my way
Cheers, Paul.
