i have been offered a clifton 420 used in good used condition for £88.00

it does look very good - what do you think is this a fair price please?

mike

I think you've already bought it and this is a new form of gloat

If you have not bought it bite his hand off its about half price of a new one, which you probably already know

Hi Mike

Whilst I am not familiar with the particular plane I would say it seems about right. The question might be 'do you need it?' If you saw it in the shops for that price would you buy it?

I have seen that people often buy stuff (particularly at auctions or carbootys) that they really wouldn't usually consider because it is cheaper (note the 'er') not because they need it. Recently I have sussed it; some folk will buy ANYTHING if they think it is a bargain (note the 'think').

I think it was CambournePete and I saw a load of used stuff sell at an auction for well over retail because the buyers presumed it would be cheap at an auction. It wasn't. No warranty and it was revved out (worn out).

Obviously this is not you Mike, but IMO the price is about right, not cheap, and if you do not need a shoulder plane (or is it another shoulder plane???) then I would leave it.

HTH

Neil

(Can you tell I bought a load of crap at the auction on saturday?? )

Thanks Neil :)

I know what you mean - but i have lusted after one of these for a while and could'nt bring myself to pay full price - so if it's about the right price i think i might treat myself :D

not that I think i NEED it I have managed perfectly well without it

too late Im afraid!

I was peering over the edge just two weeks ago looking at a clifton plane, slipped and aquired a new clifton no 4 1/2 from workshop heaven when i completely lost my footing after seeing a brand new clifton no 3 on ebay and aquired that for a fairly good price -

now it seems someone has already greased up the slope cos im hurtling down it at great speed

No stopping now then...I've managed to slow down a bit by selling a couple of planes on fleabay recently so I've redeemed myself slightly...but I bought a bit of machinery with the wedge instead - Rob
