50mm dowels

I want to make a storage unit consisting of 36 equal sections from 18mm mdf so I thought I would use dowels to joint it all together but where one shelf is opposite another one I will need a dowel 50mm long to allow the dowel to pass though the 18mm upright and locate in the two shelfs .

can you buy these ready made if so where 8mm size

Axminster sell beech dowelling in 1m lengths. I've only ever seen pre-cut dowels as long as 30mm or 40mm in 8mm thickness.

You could just use two dowels, one from each side, meeting in the middle of the upright. I don't think it would be any weaker - the shear strength of the wood is what counts.
