Does anybody know where 5 mm square black lines can be sourced? I can find up to 3.4 mm at places like Original Marquetry and others but they don't seem to go any larger, odly enough there are 5 mm square Ebony lines but much too expensive for what I want to do.

i have a nice, brand new, lie nielsen stringing thicknesser that you can borrow if you decide to make your own and give it a try out.

African Blackwood would probably be a bit spendy so you may well be looking at dyeing- i wonder whether you could dye or ebonise a mahogany or sycamore. I am sure that i have seen both used in the past for lines. At least they would have a fine grain.

I have some dye too, if you do not.

Edit, I would need to check whether 5mm would go through it. I tried it tonight and the gap is smaller than I thought it was.

what do you mean 5mm square black line,s any photo,s can i printer make them ect if so ill ask my mate

It is stringing- lengths of 5mm x 5mm wood. The cross section is square

Thanks guys, looks like I will have to try and make my own, I have some dye and will have to see if it will penetrate deep enough into the wood.

Matt, I have previously seen those but they are ebony and at over six squids each it is going to cost me too much, I need 12.

How about squirting a tube of black mastic into the groove then trimming it flush?

I suppose you could cut a 5 x 5 mm channel in a bit of wood and fill that to make lengths of black rubber, though I doubt that would be of use to you.

I actually did a bit of that recently to try and stop a small leak between some tongue and groove boards in my workshop roof.

How about using a 3.4mm and a 1.5mm and a smidgeon of glue to make it up to 5mm? http://www.restexpress.co.uk/cgi-bin/ca ... aBLFL-pack 10

It will still only be 5 mm on one side and 3.4 on the other.

It is going on the edges of a box so a rebate will be routed on all edges and the square lines stuck on and mitred at the corners
