hello folks these pieces will never set the woodturning world alight but there's something very pleasing about switching of some days and just turning.

these were all roughed out in 07 and were finished turned on friday along with some more roughing to keep the cycle going.

from top to bottom:
spalted beech
cherry
walnut
spalted beech

This is exactly what attracted me to woodturning - simple, elegant bowls. I think these are super.

Brendan

I agree with Brendan. Lovely forms there and we all need bowls even the Artists among us ;)

nice and simple - but the execution is great, lovely choice of shape vs grain in a few of them.

Did they really have to wait from 07 to be turned?!

Miles

Hi George, that bottom beech one is a corker :D .The walnut is lovely too.
I'm not so keen on the cherry, but I think its the oil finish and I can't quite describe why but the curve on the top beech one doesn't seem quite right(although this could well be the angle of the pic or my dodgy eyes  )

How about a pic of the underside of one of them to give us a look at the foot :D

I suspect not Miles. George probably hasn't got round to it before now.

A nice set of bowls that will appeal to many people. The spalted beech is quite spectacular and like the walnut. The cherry almost has the colour of mulberry. Check the corns boxwood nut and bolt. Probably the most intriguing and clever object ever to appear on ukworkshop.

Love them all,George :D
In fact, can't even pick a favourite out of them - all just elegant simplicity, and beautiful timber!

tom is right- normally you can go from green wood to finished bowl in 6-12 months- depending on what wood and drying conditions etc

i will get some pics of the base's for you JT

One thing I have learnt is that there is a vast difference between something as simple as a bowl that is made well and finished properly and a bowl that is just knocked up. These smack of quality and it shows. Simplicity of design is decievingly hard to achieve and srill look good. Your other work shows that the skills have transferred into the 'simple' things like these bowls

Thanks George :D but where's that little signature you were telling me about? :p

I assume you just cut the inner part of the 'O' away and blend it in to the bottom with a nice curve??

Cheers for showing us the underside 8)

its there jt-its just not "in yer face"

these were held on a external dovetail spigot which was then reverse turned away to leave a slightly concave base that you see.

Beautiful bowls George, as has been said the simplicity of the form is matched by top quality execution. The bottom spalted bowl has a fantastic pattern.

Lovely bowls George.

The spalted ones are a particular favourite.

Can spalted timber get too dry? i`m struggling with a piece of spalted beach, it seems very dry & is crumbling rather than cutting, i`ve re-sharpen my chisels, but to no avail.

I`m tempted to immerse it it a bucket of water, do you think this would help.

I've found that sometimes spalted wood gets spongy when it has gone too far. It can be soaked in CA glue but personally I've never thought it worth it. Goes in the kindling box.

Pete

Thanks chaps.

It`s not spongy, its more brittle than anything else.
For the time being i`ve left it covered outside, to see if it will absorb some moisture naturally.
I`ll leave it a couple of weeks, if it`s no better my neighbour has a log burner :?
