Betty Joel exhibition - From Arts & Crafts to Modernism

Hello everyone! For those of you who are interested there's an exhibition on at the Millinery Works of pieces by Betty Joel from 30 October to 18 November. Should be of interest to those of you who take an interest in Arts & Crafts designs. Check out the link below where you can also look...

    Draw lining

Thanks. I have the baize already so I'll have to stick it myself. Good tip for the future. I've had a look through my Joyce and the list of glues given are: hide glue, shoemakers' paste, dextrin, casein and Cascamite One Shot. I'm not sure what constitutes shoemakers' paste. I've never used...

    Draw lining

Hello everyone. I'm thinking of lining the drawer bottoms of the drawers I'm making as part of my current project with green baize, and I'd be grateful for thoughts on attaching the baize to the ply drawer bottoms. PVA perhaps?? Is there a traditional method? All thoughts gratefully...

    finishing cloths

I'd agree that old cotton bedsheets are good. If you don't fancy ripping up your bedding you can get good quality white sheeting from http://www.traditionalfinishes.com/system/index.html. I've got mine there and they are good and not that expensive (say compared to buying Liberon cloths).

    Trend PRT router table

I've recently purchased a Trend T11 and PRT router table. I'm wondering whether I've got the set up right for the hinged guard. The reason for this is that it seems like the fence has to be spread quite wide to allow the guard to come down. Is that right? Just petrified about losing my fingers...

    bench re-finishing

Looks like a handy purchase stef. I've recently replaced my bench top with lovely 2" thick beech. I finished it with boiled linseed oil, which does the job excellently. Just flood it on rub it in and wipe up any residue (repeat as necessary). I thinned down the first coat with some meths to aid...

    Orange peel

Boomer, I'd second all the points made above. The orange peel effect is invariably caused by applying a too thick layer of finish. The old adage of 'less is more' applies! Many layers of thin coats are infinitely better than fewer thick coats. I think that a foam roller for the finish you've...

    Bee's Wax on PIne

I think wax is quite a difficult and probably not a very satisfactory finish on its own for pine. Quoting from Frederick Oughton's comprehensive wood finishing manual "Natural pine may stubbornly refuse to be improved by wax, and it is best stained or varnished and given several thin coats of...

    Figure of 8 fasteners

Thanks Jason! Ironically I realised that I had some strips of brass from Turtles which I bought for another project but didn't use  . They are only 1/16" thick - I don't think they had any thicker, but I'll pop in there and have another poke round.

    Figure of 8 fasteners

Thanks Jason! Hadn't occurred to me to make them  I was wondering how strong figure-8 fasteners actually are? I would think they are nowhere near as strong as wooden buttons or the stretcher plates. Are they really just to 'tack' the top onto a carcass? The pedestal desk I'm making will...

    Figure of 8 fasteners

I'm trying to find somewhere that supplies figure of 8 fasteners for table/desk tops in the UK but I've drawn a blank. Can anyone help? I usually make my own buttons but I don't think I'll have enough access to use them for my current project. If anyone has any other suggestions for fasteners...

    Capstan Table

I don't know if this has already been posted but I found this rather amazing piece http://209.85.135.104/search?q=cache:zhta-rTkFYcJ:www.dbfletcher.com/capstan (Their website doesn't seem to work at the moment but it's still on the Google cache) If you click on the YouTube links you can see the...

    Shoulder plane set up

Thanks. The blade currently protrudes about 1/16" on one side when flush with the other side of the plane. I wonder if this is just the standard generous set up Clifton use?

    Shoulder plane set up

Hi Everyone, I'm about to retune my shoulder plane (Clifton 3110) and I wanted to know how much the blade should project either side of the mouth. It seems to be too much at the moment to allow the blade edge to be parallel with the mouth and to have the side of the plane flush with a tenon...

    Trend router

Thanks guys. I think a little post-Christmas present to myself is in the offing :D .

    Trend router

Hi Everyone, I'm thinking about getting myself a larger powered 1/2" collet router - I have a little T3 at the moment which I can't use for some larger cutters - and thought the T11 looks like a good offering. As I also need a router table I thought I would get the Trend PRT table to go with it...

Griffiths of Norwich - Anyone heard of them?

Here's quite an interesting article with Griffiths history http://www.sgriff.com/articles/gon/article.html. I used to have a couple of Griffith ovolo moulding planes and they were very nice indeed - gave them away as I didn't really use them (still haven't been reimbursed for postage! Oh well).

    Alignment problems

Thanks treefella. I'll get rid of the paint when I disassemble. E

    Alignment problems

Thanks Paul. I'll have another check - I found the original assembly instructions quite hard to follow, but there is a page on the Record website which is easier to follow.
