    Log Storage

Took a break from the Farm boy engine. Back playing with wood for a couple of days. No, not logs for turning but rather for a log burner as a Christmas present for one of the family. Finished with oil still wet in the photo.

    Farm Boy

Thank you guys. Not a lot to report as I am doing silly little bits and making small pins. Going through the plans and double-checking what else needs making. Getting very near the end, still need to sort out the electronics to get it running, as well as make a fuel tank and base.

I have a tub of powder that I mix as needed so can make as little or as much as needed also have different grades of silver solder. Farm Boy

After two failed attempts at the governor assembly, I manage to silver solder the two arms on and now happy with the outcome. Now onto some other small parts and a base for it to sit on so that I can attach the flywheels.

    First metal lathe advice

I would buy HSS blanks and make your own as many set half of the tools will not get used. I got a set when I brought my lathe (OK, I got a couple of sets, one being insert type free after a bit of bargaining) As for the lathe, I did buy one oversize for what I will need, but have learnt in the...

Next up - gear cutting/ gear cutters!

I use a rotary table to cut my gears, it comes with three discs for gear cutting. If you need to go around two or three times depending on gear size to cut the teeth, the dividing head is well worth learning. Luckily, the teeth I cut only needed to be none with a single pass. I know the cutter...

    Farm Boy

I was asked to post this, not sure if here under projects or in the metalworking heading. For a while now, I have been building a model of a Farm Boy hit and miss engine with thee hope of getting it running at the end. Haggling on price - is it the done thing?

Not just on second hand items. A couple of years ago I kitted out my workshop with an expensive metal lathe and milling machine along with quite a few other items to get me up and running. I did ask is there anything they could do as it was quite expensive (too me anyway). And yes, I did get...

Cordless power washer, anyone had one?

I have just brought one mainly for watering the garden when we have a hose pipe ban to save me walking back and forwards with a watering can(I have 5 water buts around the garden). So far I have used it to water the garden, clean the car, clean algae off of the greenhouse glass and finally clean...

Is this the right tool for the job?

Yes the vice can be modified, I chose not to as I am cutting larger pieces than what the OP want to cut. I have cut some silver steel today just under the 5mm there is a little vibration but still leaves a reasonable finish even with the gap

Is this the right tool for the job?

I have one like this and find it a great tool, one of the drawbacks is the minimum length as there is quite a gap between the blade and vice. Which means not getting the most out of a rod. I would need to try and cut a small diameter rod, as if I need a piece that small I tend to get the hacksaw...

How to get a piece of timber 2.5mm and spot on?

I cut slightly over the thickness after planing one face then sand them down to what is required using a drill press and drum sander as in the photo it worked for me. It just meant tapping the back fence until I was down to the thickness required. Maybe a little heath robinson but works. I then...
