Separating stud wall in garage - do I need insulation?

Thanks for this. Just went down a Google rabbit hole of finding out about firefighters who died from cables not being attached to ceilings correctly and got electrocuted when the fire displaced them. Will get some fire rated clips to hold them in place.

Separating stud wall in garage - do I need insulation?

Just double checking my lighting thoughts now I've got a full picture of whats going on. I need to have two lights in the garage on either side of the wall - we previously only had one rose pendant. I've bought the wire from the ceiling rose and spliced it into two separate offshoots, using a...

Separating stud wall in garage - do I need insulation?

I'm pretty sure I have all the gaps covered with weather seals but I will check this. I did look into insulated garage doors but none of the manufacturers seemed to want to back up their very generic sound isolation claims when pressed...

Separating stud wall in garage - do I need insulation?

Another q - this time regarding the terrible topic of sound proofing. Whilst the neighbours haven't complained, my girlfriend mentioned how loud the table saw sounded outside the garage. Sounds obvious but the rest of the house has amazing sound isolation, so hadn't really given it too much...

HEPA Air purifier(s) for fine dust

I’m not so sure I believe it. In the gym this morning I turned off the lights and put the head torch on and could see a lot of dust in the air, where as I couldn’t see it in other parts of the house. It could still be correct, given you can’t see PM2.5 particles, but given the air is dustier...

HEPA Air purifier(s) for fine dust

Turns out our continually selfish neighbours had a fire in their back garden last night that stunk up the entire street. PM2.5 counter hit 200 last night in our bedroom. Measured the garage again this morning. I’m kinda stunned. 5.7 in the garage, with no air treatment. But that does line up...

HEPA Air purifier(s) for fine dust

Air particle counter arrived today. The big number is PM2.5. Accuracy is obviously as point of contention here, given it’s a brand-of-the-week Amazon model, but the LEDs (red/purple/green) on the air purifier seem to roughly match that of the counter. The first reading with no air treatment...

Separating stud wall in garage - do I need insulation?

So I started looking into this today, and quickly realised I only have one light in the garage, which will need to be two. I took off the fixture and had a poke around. Theres solid insulation in behind the plasterboard in the ceiling, meaning running an extra wire through it would be...

HEPA Air purifier(s) for fine dust

Totally get that, and I think an air filter/scrubber is on the table at some point. I think it’s just I’m coming to the conclusion that having the workshop and gym together is a health hazard, even with the filter, so the wall is being prioritised. Filter is certainly the next purchase though...

HEPA Air purifier(s) for fine dust

I guess this is an argument as for why we should all use our cars less - so we’re all breathing in less diesel fumes.

HEPA Air purifier(s) for fine dust

I’m still in the “I’m not sure if I’ll like this hobby” phase of woodworking, so ideally this is a budget minded purchase. But also don’t want to mess up my future heath because of this, so just trying to find the right balance. I guess that me saying I’m not sure how much money I have to...

Separating stud wall in garage - do I need insulation?

That was what I was hoping for. Going to do some research to see if our home insurer would grumble at this but otherwise, think I’m good to go. Might do it in parts - so this month put the stud work up and plasterboard up on one side, then tackle the rest next month. Either way, thanks for...

Separating stud wall in garage - do I need insulation?

Thanks for this. Will bear the gym stuffiness in mind as ours already gets stuffy in the summer. Not against putting a vent/window in that side either honestly. Maybe a silly question, but did you have to get planning permission or notify insurance companies for this sort of thing?

Will do! There’s a shower tray that needs looking at first, but this sounds more exciting…

Separating stud wall in garage - do I need insulation?

Oh awesome! If you don’t mind me asking - did you use any vapour barrier lining at all? And did you plywood both sides, or just the one?

Separating stud wall in garage - do I need insulation?

Hi all, Once again, budget reigns supreme here. After a conversation in the general woodworking forum, I’ve decided I need a way to separate my gym and workshop. They currently both reside at other ends of my garage, but that’s not so great for dust inhalation. The garage is already pretty...

HEPA Air purifier(s) for fine dust

I feel like I’m going way off topic here - I think a separating stud wall of sorts between the gym and the workshop is the way I’m going to go to ensure maximum safety. Is there a basic version of a stud wall that won’t require any insulation? I’m sort of thinking stud framing with plywood...

HEPA Air purifier(s) for fine dust

These are the power tools I have at the moment (listing brands as I don’t know if it’s helpful rather than doing it as a “hey look at my equipment” thing): - Makita palm router (their lowest end corded unit - use the vacuum attachment with it) - Makita 150mm sander (I do use this in the garage...

HEPA Air purifier(s) for fine dust

Thank you for all this info. I've gone over the article but will need to sit down with it to have a proper in depth read. Based on your summary and what I have read though, I feel like I'm in a tricky place. I wear my respirator with HEPA filters whenever I'm going into the garage to use tools...
