Dan I think you are right that it is worth spending a more on the cutters that you are going to use a lot.
I did on the other hand buy a set of really cheap cutters the other day as it had one...
I've been using and buying Makita stuff for years and have always been happy with the build quality.
If possible I try to get things made by makita in the uk.
