    Staining 'oak' filler

I carry 3 tubs of the Everbuild filler on the van.Light oak, Oak and Mahogany incase of pin holes etc and mix them in various ratios to suit. You want to be looking for it to blend in when it is finished, not a match for the bare timber as has been said. I use different mixes/ratios even on the...

    Dusty Boys floor protection?

I use the 8x4 corrugated sheets and cut them to whatever shape/width and tape together with duct tape if dust sheets are inappropriate. They fold up quite compact to keep in the van to reuse.About £5 sheet from Howdens/Wickes/b&q.

    Glue or not to glue

There's a world of difference between gluing square edge boards together to make a panel and gluing T&G boards together. You don't glue T&G boards it will split at the tongue. Probably one of the first things you are taught in a joiners shop as apprentices.

Am I really that out of touch?

Done two kitchens now where Ive fitted reclaimed scaffold board shelving instead of wall units as part of the design at the customers request. To be fair they looked great. One kitchen had a Belfast sink which went very well with the shelving.

    Howdens

Personally I like Howdens. They have the stock so when I do a job I know I can get the gear and finish the job.

    Butt hinge size

Personally I would add an extra hinge and allow a bit extra clearance around the doors. What I've found with wardrobes is the door with the mirror is often left wide open (or at least not fully shut) for long periods as it is usually the most used door and as you say they can be quite heavy!

Metabo 260C 10" Planer thicknesser - First impressions.

@Chubber Nice write up. Regards chip extraction I bought a metabo plastic dust outlet for my Elektra bekum planer which should be the same as your machine? and cut the plastic away inside so it is a full hole and dont get any chippings stuck to the timber thicknessing full width boards.

Little & Large of Yankees - lucky find.

Still have the Yankee 131B in my toolbag from being an apprentice and use it occasionally for removing stubborn slotted screws, usually period doors when you need a bit of leverage. It's a great reminder of how we worked before cordless drills when you get it out.

    Chisel Buying Advice

Personally I like a couple of Firmer chisels aswell as bevel edge in the tool roll. All are second hand.My most used chisels are the 3/4 and 1/2 Firmer. Mine are old and belonged to an old carpenter before me.Keep an edge much longer than anything else I've owned and prefer them for general...

    Making my own door frames

When using linings for jobs I make my own.Finished at 27mm. I also fix it permanently then plasterboard goes up neat to the lining then skimmed. Door is fitted after the plaster is dry and not before, hence fixed permanently.Fit the lining level, plumb and in wind and the door will go straight...

    Multitool advice

Cordless for me.Just so handy.Had the DeWalt for 5 years for work.Great tool and it gets a fair bit of use. Can't fault it at all.I use it with whatever battery is handy either 5ah or 2ah. Personally all I use with it are cheap 32mm blades.Cant see the point in dear blades as they just get...

    Flooring options for existing workshop

Personally I would empty the garage and make a job of it.Prime the floor with SBR then a decent self levelling compound. When I did my garage floor I lifted everything into the garden and covered it up well while I did it. An alternative, which I did in the past during a commercial workshop...
