    Sanders

I have the Bosch GEX12V cordless. For what it is, it's great. It's comfortable to use, nicely balanced, dust collection works well. But it's not a Deros, if you need a daily workhorse to regularly sand large surfaces, this is not it.

    Led light panels

How are you guys mounting the recess panels? Do you have the full grid ceiling, or are you just sticking single panels up?

    Electric vehicles

Not unsurprising, but somewhat stupid given the savings to be had if you use a PHEV on electric only mode when running around close to home. I ummed and ahhed about a PHEV for a while, but one big downside is that you then have 2 entire power units to service and maintain. Personally I don't...

Kia EV9? As an addendum to my previous post at the top of this page, the thing that held me back from getting a second EV as our 'big' car was the fact that we have 2 teenage boys (I'm 6'3 and they're catching up fast), and we go on family camping holidays every year. My outgoing car is a Q5...

    Electric vehicles

Maybe. Although I just bought a second one. We've had a Zoe for nearly 6 years. Wife uses it daily for driving to work. Luckily we have a large drive, and it get's charged on cheap overnight rate. Costs pittance to run. We've maybe charged once a year on a public charger when the kids have...

    GU10s to LED

We had 12v Mr16 lights throughout our upstairs, some on dimmers. For a few years I tried numerous MR16 dimmable LEDs from all the top brands - Osram, Philips, GE - and also changed all the drivers to specialist dimmable LED drivers. In the end I gave it all up as a bad job. They're all rubbish...

    Home library

This is looking great. I did a wall of builtins around 2 chimney breasts back in our old place. The painting drove me nuts.

Wait a minute. This doesn't sound like something you want your better half going around saying about you!

    Circular Saw Vs Track Saw

Is a track saw better than a circ with a straightedge? Yes, and no. IMO, it very much depends on what you are trying to build, and how regularly you want to use it. If you are ripping up sheet goods for rough work, then a track saw is pretty simple to drop on your marks and fire, but ultimately...

    Forstner Drill Bits

Odd. My Fisch brads are like razors. The cut incredibly clean holes. I have the 1-13mm HSS set. Regarding Forstner bits. I have some Bosch Professional, Fisch, and KWB. All wave cutters. The Fisch ones are a smidge better from new, but the KWB ones are excellent. The Bosch and KWB bits are...

    Lay out pens?

Maybe a sewing layout pencil? Bohin mechanical pencil can be used with a number of different coloured chalks.

Are EV's good value? Apparently not!

One of the problems with transitioning to a different model is the, erm, _transitioning_ part. Petrol cars and the current associated fuel infrastructure didn't just spring out of nowhere in the 1880s, and continue as-is to the present day. And If you wanted a Benz in 1886 you would need to part...

Are EV's good value? Apparently not!

We've had a Zoe ZE40 for just over 5 years. We bought it pre-reg for 65% of RRP. For our usage, which is mostly my wife's short commute (varied from 50miles per day to the current 10 miles per day), it's perfect. It mostly gets charged on 7kw home charger on economy 7 rate. In the summer we also...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Made myself a Paul Sellers router plane. Had a piece of beech I'd earmarked for this kicking around for over a year. Finally pulled my finger out over the weekend and got it done.

That sign is fantastic. Definitely gives it an extra hand-crafted dimension with the background texture.

Advice for Making a Parquet Desktop

Thanks. Sounds like my best option if I used the parquet would be to glue it up in a regular block/brick pattern. I could glue it up into a few 'planks' using a jig, then run each plank through the planer before gluing them up to final width.

    Setting up a plane

One of these. I have a Faithful No.4 that works a charm. The sole took a LOT of flattening, but also the cap iron was well out of true. Possibly worth mentioning that the bevel on the cap iron needs to be ground with the iron dropped off the side of the stone else the tip will be forced up...

Advice for Making a Parquet Desktop

Yes. I have a planer/thicknesser. Also have a set of old blades that have a slight nick at one end. I've sharpened them, and plan is to run the stock through on a sled and keep to one side. Yeah. This was my initial thought. Get everything dimensioned and then glue to a backer. My concern was...

Advice for Making a Parquet Desktop

Recently discovered that one of our neighbours had a load of the parquet we have in our house stored in his shed and wanted to get rid of it. For a while I've wanted to make a parquet coffee table for the lounge, but now I have a huge pile of the stuff, I may parquet the whole house. 95%...
