Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

The Forestry Commission offer free courses but they have limited funding and it’s closed for 2024 - a mate just did a weeks hedge laying course with them in Wiltshire - and if you lay boundary hedges you can also get a grant of £13.25 per metre - tough work but “free” money...

Source of thin wide boards - Walnut

Yep, prices are eye watering - it would be for guns and cartridges etc in one drawer then glasses and alcohol (obviously for medicinal purposes!) in the other - this is way outside of my woodworking comfort zone!

    What's this, chaps?

If it’s crunchy it’s salt - if it’s soft it’s not…. If it is on the dry crunchy side scrape some into a pot with some water to dissolve it then put a multimeter in set to resistance - if it’s a saline solution the resistance will be way lower than water - or drop in a shiny copper coin and see...

Source of thin wide boards - Walnut

thank you (and everybody else) - some really good new sources of timber - am going to resaw some thicker planks as that’s the most cost effective - fingers crossed there will be a pic of new cabinet at some stage!!

It’s for a gun/drinks type cabinet to go in the bed of my truck and I can’t guarantee no water gets to it (I’ll raise it so it’s not in standing water and the tonneau cover is watertight but still likely to get damp - I fear the veneer may eventually peel away

Scrub that - just did the maths again and although it’s cheaper it’s only about 10% less!

Am in Northants so not too far - that’s a better board price than I have been seeing, thank you, although the it’s a lot of resawing if I go that route

Source of thin wide boards - Walnut

Just had a quick squint on t’internet and it’s definitely a much cheaper option - I had no idea that 2.5mm veneer existed!!

Source of thin wide boards - Walnut

That’s a really interesting thought, thank you - I have vacuum pressed veneer before although admittedly only small pieces and never thought about making a veneer ply - not sure how it would look on exposed joints though..

Source of thin wide boards - Walnut

I am going to be making a couple of cabinets and as they are going to be fiddly and use a lot of wood. I wondered if anybody has a good UK source for thin (10mm or under) cut walnut (doesn’t have to be walnut, could be something else). I can resaw larger pieces and have a thicknesser and drum...

That’s exquisite - out of curiosity (not that I could ever attempt it) about how long did it take you?

Turning green Japanese Maple into handles - how to finish?

Thanks Paul - unfortunately it had to be cut now not in the winter. I sealed all the ends within 20 mins of them being cut. Having read all the advice given I will leave them for a while then turn some of the smaller pieces - if I do see any splitting I’ll take a view.

    Bandsaw question..

I have a Laguna 14BX which has two extraction ports and have the same set up as your friend (Y-tube) then 100mm hose into a 3HP extractor - dust collection is very good.

Turning green Japanese Maple into handles - how to finish?

I (after a great deal of soul searching) have removed a 20+ year old Japanese Maple and have been left with a few decent pieces of wood that will turn nicely into tool/cutlery handles. I have never spindle turned green wood before so should be fun, and hopefully they will shrink and hold on the...

Add the word “disabled” or “accessible” to anything and the price becomes crazy - this was a way cheaper solution to the problem and mechanically it’s a lot simpler too - I did have to reduce the size of my bar a bit though, which still hurts!!
