    Flood proofing new shed

Pontoon design circumnavigates both those issues. Well it does useless some jobsworths reports the elevated ridge height mid during a flood, or the misses wants to mow the lawn during a flood. If either of those situations present themselves, I suggest getting into the pontoon shed, slip lines...

    Flood proofing new shed

Incorporate a pontoon base into the design, much like you'd see in a boat marina. Cheap and simply to make and very effective.

So what are peoples thoughts and any potential impact on yourself

Governments (left/right blue/red) have only two attributes; they produce nothing and are fecklessness. They must borrow and tax. They will invariably squander everything they take, and it follows that the more they borrow and tax, the bigger the burden that must carried and deeper the hole we...

Paint spec for renovated sash windows

When you say it will struggle and wont work, are you referring to the paint finish and end result that both HVLP and/or water-based will produce? I believe the hvlp will also spray oil based, albeit I assume diluted.

Paint spec for renovated sash windows

Possibly, but for now I think the £60 HVLP provides a good introduction to spraying, I also think that perhaps HVLP may be the better option (vs airless and my novice ranking) for my windows and a new front and frame I'm working on

Paint spec for renovated sash windows

@deema I had a look at the Erbauer airless sprayer, it has some really great reviews and from professional decorators who seem knowledgeable. Thanks for suggesting it. Their HVLP sprayer is similarly well reviewed and only £60, I think it may be great option for a first foray into spraying...

    DIY rough sawn to PAR

@Fitzroy thanks for sketching out what you did. That sequence is pretty much what I had in my head also. One point that your sketch illustrates that I hadn't considered is that my fence is probably too short (height wise) to support the cill on edge, however I can easily bolt in a 6" plywood...

Paint spec for renovated sash windows

You previously mentioned these brushes are being phased out, why is that? And why are they so good, and what is a good size to buy? Thanks again for all the comments Johnny!

    DIY rough sawn to PAR

I think a regular bevel could be machined on the thicknesser however I want to machine in a 10mm upstand at the upper side of the sill, I don't think that the thicknesser would allow that. I seen joiners typically using a tilting head spindle moulder to machine this particular profile detail.

I think its fair to say older hands seem to prefer brush applied oil and those younger are more open to use water based and spraying, maybe experience vs progression. Both positions have a place. I need to read back and summarise the options, see which makes sense, I may yet have the brushes out!

Paint spec for renovated sash windows

There seems to be as many votes for water based and against solvent, as there is for solvent and against water based! The truth must be that most of the time both either paint will perform completely fine, otherwise the argument is that one camp is always right and the other always wrong; and...

    DIY rough sawn to PAR

I'm actually now considering purchasing the P/T the Metabo HC260C. I'd still have to cut/finish the weathering bevel on the table saw/electrical hand plane but I'll just have to suffer that, the wife would hit the roof if a palleted tilting head spindle moulder lands on the driveway. She...

    DIY rough sawn to PAR

They will be square edged sawn, I've also asked the yard if they machine to PAR, I believe they will so I've asked for a quote. Dimensioned PAR would be a great head start (vs sawn) and then cutting the bevels and upstands would be a lot easier.

    DIY rough sawn to PAR

Ah sure the aggro is what keeps it interesting! There is a local joinery but I'm trying to figure out/justify having the ability to do basic machining myself. Plus experience has unfortunately demonstrated that the less things you ask others to do for you the less disappointed you will be.

BUMP Anyone able to give me a sanity check on above? Really don't want to buy a load of sawn timber and then struggle to machine it to a reasonable condition!

Can you say what exact types of paints are categorised as being Traditional. Would be interesting if you could list the typical paint build-up of a mid victorian sash window as mine? I'm a complete novice with regarded to paint and there have been a lot of really knowledgeable post here from...

Paint spec for renovated sash windows

Agreed they probably are not the best subject for spraying but I have seen them successfully sprayed before and they aren't that far off door frames and architraves which are commonly sprayed. Good point on lipping the paint onto the glass. I am aware of that technique and its benefits, I have...

Paint spec for renovated sash windows

Drying times of linseed paint are as I understand long, esp in winter, I dont have the time. Plan is to use an airless set up, not sure if that presents the same issues regarding temp/viscosity.

Paint spec for renovated sash windows

Haha, I've actually discounted the old methods, hopefully not out of ignorance but a few other factors that swing the balance towards spraying. I have been able to remove the box frames entirely, which I imagine will make spraying easier. Spraying is a skill I want to acquire, I have a good lot...

Paint spec for renovated sash windows

Thanks for feedback on MSP. Struggling to reach 13 degs this week at least, but perhaps I could cobble together some manner of drying spray room/area to keep the tempreture up. I've seen the Barn paint online and sound like a better option than the MSP in this instance. Ankerstuy seems like a...
