    Aurora tonight

It was impressive from Cumbria last night. First time I’ve seen colour in the aurora with my naked eye, normal take a camera to pick it up.

    Sparking motor

The saw itself cuts very well - though I've seen a lot of negative reviews for it this is the first 'issue' for me with it. I have searched for others with similar sparking issues and found this on another site - So all could be normal after all, though I'm not a fan of seeing sparks in the...

Thanks, it was intentionally formed - when I started to plane it I noticed a badly positioned split, rather than cut it flat I decided to make it into a feature of the piece.

    Sparking motor

Thanks I just had another read through and think I've checked most things, when I discussed it with a friend they suggested it could be a design feature - electric brake to slow the blade quicker than it would if left to spin freely.

    Sparking motor

I replaced the brushes and gave everything a clean, sadly it's still sparking especially when I turn it off. Someone suggested that it could be normal like this but it doesn't look right to me.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

    Sparking motor

I've had a Dewalt DWE7485 for a couple of years now, today I noticed the motor was sparking when I start and stop the saw (it's worse when I stop it). I blasted the motor with some air in case something was stuck in there but I'm wondering if it's the brushes? Any thoughts?

    Wadkin MJ3435 Bandsaw question

I was given a Wadkin MJ3435 Bandsaw last year, it had a known fault in that it wouldn't always start up, I changed the capacitor and the bandsaw has worked okay for a few months and now when I press the start button it just struggles to start moving and essentially just turns over slowly. I'm...

    Setting up a plane

I bought a #4 Faithful a few years ago then didn’t get chance to use it for a year or two as I moved house and workshop. When I came to use it I discovered it was needing a lot of fettling, luckily I’d just read Schwartz’s book on hand planes https://amzn.to/3SSj8k4 so I spent a day flattening...

    Smartwatch for the workshop

I take my smart watch off before I go the workshop as I don't want the distraction, it's always on when I'm not in there though. Besides, from past experience I tend to damage watches quite quickly in the workshop which isn't something I want to do with a few hundred pounds worth of watch ;)

    Trend Airshield ear protectors

I have a Tend Airshield Pro which I've used on and off for over a year, today the ear defenders kept popping off whenever I adjusted them which became very annoying. Has anyone had this happen to them, the clip on the ear defenders which click into the headpiece look quite weak, I could glue...

    Clifton Number 3 Plane Blade

From my experience the quality control at Clifton isn't what it used to be. I purchased a #4 plane earlier this year and needed to use it straight away but it took a fair bit of fettling, when I mention this to Clifton's customer support they essentially said I wasn't in a position to say that...

Coffee & Side Tables - work in progress

Thanks, we think the wood is oak, I was offered five pieces of it many years ago and for a while they formed a playground in the chicken run before I found a use for them. I sanded them smooth but did nothing else to them but they work well as speaker stands around the room.

Coffee & Side Tables - work in progress

Thanks all, it was finished with several coats of danish oil, then a light coat of wax (as I like the feel the wax is leaving ;-) ) tenons were cut by have but due to the number of mortices I cut them with a morticer. Managed to get the two side tables finished in the same style today, took me...

Before I Put the [redacted] Plane Through the Window

I can recommend this hand plane book https://amzn.to/46PkEt6 by Schwarz helped me a great deal on setting up my planes and techniques - some of it is about fancy planes costing the same as a used car which I’ll never need but the rest is good 😉
