    Planning application

For England (the rules are different elsewhere) There is a good explainer of permitted development rights at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/permitted-development-rights-for-householders-technical-guidance/permitted-development-rights-for-householders-technical-guidance. Look at...

    Planning application

I’m a town planner. For householder projects, which is what this would be, you don’t necessarily need a consultant to assist unless it’s particularly complicated. The plans need to be to scale (2d) and the forms completed correctly, but the forms aren’t difficult. The local council might have...

    Finish for chestnut

Hi, I am making a side table from chestnut. I want to keep the wood colour but soften the appearance of the grain a bit because it looks very dark when oiled. Would the best thing be a grain filler, a finish (something like Rubio) with a colour in it, or both? Thanks

    Warped workbench top

Thanks All for your constructive comments. Looks like its a more major rebuild. I'll take the advice on board and look at more significant adjustments. At the time I weighed up building my own or buying one ready made, and as the costs came out similar I opted for convenience. Lesson learned.

    Warped workbench top

Thanks. Images from underneath below. I did wonder if the fixed end panels limit the sideways movement of the wood on the main top too much. Shed is in part sun part shade. I do heat it when I’m in there when needed, and have a dehumidifier, but that is only the few hours a week when I’m out...

    Warped workbench top

Hi, wood movement question… I bought a workbench about four months ago and the top was flat when it arrived. I gave it two coats of polyurethane varnish top and bottom. There is now a noticeable amount of movement on the surface, see the photos. My question is how to recover it. Is it ok to...

Hello from a shed in Hampshire

Hi, just introducing myself as a new member having just found this forum. I’m Matt, and a relative newcomer to woodwork. Not quite sure when it started to be honest, I think it was in lockdown when I made a couple of simple things for the garden, and it has snowballed from there. I’ve done a...
