18mm plywood + maximum groove depth

It sound on the high end but I did ask around and was in the realm of "normal" for the size of the house/wrap-around scaffolding tower (as addressing lots of remedial work on the underside of the roof that extends around 40cm from the brick line). I've told myself that when the tower is up I...

    Build in bookshelf suppliers

Hi Joe If you scroll through this thread you can see my home library I finished last month https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/home-library.147036/page-5#post-1749320 Making from scratch vs pre-built is a long discussion but ultimately, if you find pre-builts that fit your space well then...

18mm plywood + maximum groove depth

Scaffolding is a must for sure, £3500 of my quote is for that element, it's an Edwardian property ie you're about 7m off the ground before you start at the lowest part of the roof. It's not too dissimilar to the work you're doing. Access is incredibly restricted and thus it's all but impossible...

18mm plywood + maximum groove depth

I'm envious that you're able to do that. I've got a slate roof in dire need of repair but I'm useless at heights. Have a roofer booked in for 2025 but that's a 5 figure repair I'd love to have tackled myself. Only last week treated myself to a 6m extension ladder and my knees were shaking only...

18mm plywood + maximum groove depth

It's a wide one... Around 1100mm x 300mm (with a 20mm depth x 45mm vertical height hardwood lip at the front). Sagulator has me in the acceptable range and to be honest will be light load stuff, the room is next door to the library I've just built ie those shelves are taking the heavy load. This...

18mm plywood + maximum groove depth

Previously have surface mounted LED strips, hiding them behind shelf lips on angled profiles. This time I'm looking at backlighting for a subtler effect, using a straight bit to router a groove the whole length of the shelf near the rear. I'm a little apprehensive about the depth required for...

Leaving them raw. Books will eventually pretty much cover every inch and like the Matt contrast with the sheen of the satin painted areas. Think of it was more of a shelving units, where liquids/candles and so forth would be involved I'd definitely be inclined to add some protection

Final update pics below. Last coats on, desk and window sill varnished, light fittings/sockets in. Unfortunately no books in for a while as this room now becomes the workshop, and the current workshop becomes the next project.

I can imagine. As I'm building it I think "oh can't wait to get this painted" and fail to remember every bloody time how much I loathe the painting part

That's was a long day. 12 hours of sanding and painting without a break but a ridiculous amount of cutting in and always like to get a coat down in one day. Looks a bit rough as first of the top coats but tomorrow will start to come together with a (hopefully) final top coat then I'll wire in...

This is super information re composite. It's like a hidden secret that there are downsides as it's the first I've heard and all points are extremely valid. Thanks for sharing

    Yet another bodge job

Think what has saved it is the builders seem to be more knowledgeable about timber than the other building materials. They've kept the main structural joists away from the floor/soil. That and 15 years of I assume fairly good patio grout maintenance has kept water ingress to a minimum. On a...

    Wardrobe sag and advice

I'm in the final week of a library project where I've built about 50 shelves so I got very familiar with sagulator et al. Is your span of concern just a carcass partition between hanging and drawers or will it be load bearing? Granted a shelf of books is a different load to clothes, I...

Agree although was first and probably last time I'm using MDF skirting, back to pine for me. Switched for 2 reasons (1) local merchants had the two heights I wanted in MDF only and (2) liked the idea of pre primed to save time. Unfortunately it was only pre primed ie not sanded and where the...

And see all the mistakes?🤣 Although I was quite proud it only took 2 tubes of caulk. Well below my average. Jokes aside, I'm happy with 99% of it. The 1% was a shocker of a day, don't know how it happened, must have accidentally slipped the dial but my 32mm nail gun decided to penetrate through...

Quick update, back from holiday (North Wales is lovely!), wood filler where needed, Zinsser 123 first coat primer, sanded, horrible day of caulking, crown primer & undercoat on today, colour tomorrow. Where you see white it will be colour washed with the green. First time doing coving and found...
