    Staircase Spindle

One of my landing spindles has been cracked halfway down its length and I need to get it out in order to make a repair. Can anyone advise as to how the top and bottom are fixed. Would they be simply nailed or might they be on pegs/dowels? The house is 1905 Edwardian.

Planning to make a 12x24ft workshop in my garden on blocks and seeking feedback on current plan

The concrete blocks are cemented upon a reinforced concrete base/pad. It was designed so as to take a Massey Ferguson 135 plus other lighter machinery and the inevitable 'stuff'

Planning to make a 12x24ft workshop in my garden on blocks and seeking feedback on current plan

Consider pitching the roof at a greater angle. In my opinion it will look better, shed water better, give you a better feeling inside and greater scope within. Check planning though as I think anything more than 3m at the tallest would require planning, unless of course for some other reason...

The joys of electric car ownership!

I'm with you on this. Some people just don't seem able to fill up from the other side.

You have hit the nail on the head but also punched it in...........something else they wouldn't necessarily do these days.

    Feeling old

I'm 98 and still walk 5 miles each day. On a Sunday I cycle 15 miles to my daughters for lunch and then cycle home again. Every month I try to go swimming at least once a fortnight and generally clock up 50 lengths. When I'm not gardening I also help my son in his landscaping business...

Advice needed please on building a small wood workshop

On our build we used Rockwool slabs. After building the frame we wrapped with breathable membrane and fitted the exterior weatherboard. Then in went the insulation before finally finishing the inside with 11mm OSB.

What will happen to your tools when you die?

In very recent years I have sold the contents of my late brother-in-law's shed. At the same time I have also helped the widow of a very close friend sell her late husbands tools. All have been done over 3 or 4 village garage sales and been pretty successful. The sales highlighted the disposal...

    Second Hand Titan Table Saw

Can't go far wrong assuming it does work. As you say with a new blade and a clean up it should be just fine for pallet wood. Given that blade is so rusty I would be concerned about the machine having been left out in the rain or something similar. That said if the electric motor goes smoothly...

Setup for a beginner - really long shopping list

My brother was a cabinet maker for Heals of Tottenham Court Road and worked on some very prestigious pieces including items for the Royal Family. He also represented Great Britain in the cabinet making Olympics many years ago. My father was a carpenter/joiner all his life and made his living...

As has already been commented a s/h Hegner would be my advice. I did just that after researching like you are doing now.

Source of good quality brass screws?

Them brass jobbies from Screwfix, to my mind, are not upto scratch in terms of high quality. You take a proper old screw and its colour is like 'rose gold' not bright and shiny. Nettlefords were the boys to go to or perhaps a yacht chandlery if you are near the sea/coast.

"Well, I woke up this mornin'..."

I hesitate in this company to say I was an estate agent for just over 30 years and I agree with you entirely. Many times in recent years I have reminded people that current rates are silly low and they don't know how lucky they are. When they were high in the mid 80's I seem to remember my...

Time you was in bed at 23.33 !! Sitting up editing and uploading video in the middle of the night, whatever next?..............scroll sawing without breaking a blade 😜

    Turning and burning!

Good advice Martin, thanks for being in touch. I will do what you say and perhaps also practice using a No.7 or No.9 blade

    Camera buying advice please

This really made me think. A former professional photographer selling up £££££ of kit and now finds a phone is sufficient. I've been an enthusiastic amateur for 40 years plus and still use a half reasonable Nikon D7100. I guess times change and that is why some of us become 'old farts'. Same in...

    What do you collect

Yes, I can imagine the smell too. Most young lads in the playground used to flick the cards trying to knock down cards that had been stood up against a wall or something equally suitable. If you were successful and knocked down the last standing card you collected 'the pot' all the cards used...

    Turning and burning!

Unfortunately I'm unable to adjust the speed as I'm using an older Hegner with single speed. I think it might actually be the old ply and its glue coupled with me being very hesitant to move along the line of cut.
