Should I cut my arbor to be able to bore deeper?

I never knew they existed. That is great info. Thanks Phil.

Should I cut my arbor to be able to bore deeper?

Yes Lorenzi, that is exactly the problem. The arbor is ejected before I can retract the tail stock to its full depth.

Should I cut my arbor to be able to bore deeper?

Thanks for the prompt responses. Yes, there should be no problem removing the arbor from the chuck, though I intend to leave it permanently on the chuck. If I were to purchase any additional accessories requiring the same arbor then I would just splash for an additional, dedicated arbor. They're...

Should I cut my arbor to be able to bore deeper?

I have an Axminster AC305WL lathe. One of its shortcomings is how little travel there is on the tail stock, a maximum of 5 centimetres. I have just added a new chuck to my accessories but unfortunately, because of the length of arbor, it is ejected from the tail stock after only 3.5...

    What is this joint called?

Thanks for the link. Ari Otoshi is not the easiest joint name to remember. :)

    What is this joint called?

Good idea. Dorian Bracht is the name that springs to mind. I subscribe to his channel and do enjoy the content. Thanks for the suggestion.

    What is this joint called?

I was sort of expecting this type of reply. 😄😁 If I were to name it I would call it a mortice and tenon captured lapped halving dovetail.

    What is this joint called?

When I was designing my workbench I came up with a simple joint to connect the stretchers to the leg. The long stretcher attaches to the inner face of the leg using a dovetail. The short stretcher captures the dovetail joint with a mortice and tenon. I draw bored it, but it could also be wedged...

Offcuts and what to do with them

If you have a lathe and time then you could turn them into drawer pulls, spinning tops, tool handles (especially to replace the ugly plastic ones on files and rasps) and other items that can be easily sold at a car boot sale. If you don't have a lathe, but you have a table saw or band saw then...

Using copper grease for hand tools

I have just finished restoring a little egg beater hand drill that was in quite a badly neglected state. One of the things I found strange was the use of copper grease inside the shaft. It did a great job of resisting the corrosion that really damaged the exterior surfaces. After clean up and...

    GDR 600 hatchet

Here she is, all cleaned up, re-hung and sharpened. The oak I used for the handle has a bit of runout, but since it's not a felling axe it should be fine. I've not had a chance to use it yet so I have no idea about the edge retention, but I do like the balance. I've sharpened it, not razor...

    New tools?

I must have been a very good boy. Santa brought me a brand new wood turning lathe. 🙂

    GDR 600 hatchet

A friend gave me this little hatchet as a thank you gift for some work I did for him. He's had it lying around for a while with the intention to do something to restore it. I placed it in a derusting bath for 48 hours and revealed a stamp. A bit of internet research later and I've...

    Is this cross grain?

Yes, another name for it is ray fleck and is a good indication that the boards are quarter sawn.
