    Daft question?

Daft question - can you stack drawer slides on the same drawer? For example, if I wanted to build a drawer box that was 80cm tall, in order to assist with smooth running as well as weight management could I affix a set of slides at the bottom and another set higher up?

    Fitting an oak windowsill

Thanks for the replies. I've not visited the house to check the existing cills yet, however I believe from being there previously they will be a mix of wooden window board and tile. I don't know these are the ones they want replacing but these are windows caught in pictures I took of other work...

    Fitting an oak windowsill

Hi all, after some advice please. A friend has asked me to replace some internal windowsills with oak ones. I’ve never fitted any before, but feel like it’ll be similar to fitting an alcove shelf, which is something I have done. The prospect of movement and/or cupping concerns me, and I’m...

    Wide alcove shelves

I'm terribly grateful for all the excellent information in your replies. Thank you. The client has decided they want to go for lower cabinets only, with no shelves. I'll take your tips forward with me though 👍🏻

    Wide alcove shelves

Thank you. Yeah, an end panel is my preferred choice and I'm waiting for the client to come back to me with an answer on creating full height units as opposed to separate cupboards and shelves. I just wanted to come up with a backup plan in case they say they don't want full height ones.

    Wide alcove shelves

Thanks for the reply. Making the shelves in two parts was how I was going to go about it. My worry was more about making sure the holes drilled in the masonry were correct, rather than the shelf. Drilling multiple 15mm holes in a brick wall, the slightest bit wander and I'll be struggling.

    Wide alcove shelves

Morning, Hoping you can give me advice about wide alcove shelves. I've been asked to build some shelves in two alcoves, with fitted cabinets below. The right side is 1.52m wide, which is larger than others I've done before. The left side is narrower, at 1.37m, however it has no wall to the...

    I need an invisible connector

Thank you for the replies so far. It doesn’t need to be removable, it’ll be permanently fixed. I can’t fit the strips in the workshop as the three units needs to be transported separately as together they’re 4m wide. So my plan was to build and paint the cabinets, and the strips. Once the...

    I need an invisible connector

Hi, I‘m building a run of 3x cabinets that run from floor to almost ceiling. The design of the unit means each cabinet has a decorative ‘cover strip’. I need to find a way to fit this strip on site, after it’s been constructed and painted. The Lamello Zeta with a clamex fitting would be the...

Finishing oak to match existing furniture

Thank you all for the replies. After getting a sample and doing a test piece the customer decided to go with one coat of Osmo wax oil tinted colour amber. The shelves are fitted now and the client is over the moon with them. The fit the other wood in the room wonderfully. I’m very happy 😊

Finishing oak to match existing furniture

I was hoping for some advice please in the type of finish to apply to bare oak to match some existing furniture? I’m building some alcove cabinets and shelves for a client which are made from American oak. They’ve sent me an image of some furniture they have in the room already that they would...

    Protecting walnut laminated MDF

Morning, I’m building a TV/media unit which has a 5.5m top. I’m making this from 3x sections of 26mm walnut laminated MDF. It’s going to be edge banded across the front to give the appearance of a solid piece. It’s only 25cm deep, with a 1.8m centre section that’s 45cm deep. The rest of the...

    How would you make this?

I’ve been asked to make the below set of units, replicating the design exactly. I’m comfortable with how to build the carcasses and doors etc, but it’s the top that throwing me. It’s 5.4m long and they want it to be in a dark wood style. The outer cupboards are only 250mm deep and the centre...

    Track saw - T55 or Mafell MT55

Mafell user here - thoroughly recommend it. I've no experience with the TS55, but I have got a KS60 mitre saw and the Festool quality is superb. In truth I don't think you'll go wrong with either option, they're both at the top of the track saw game. Both excellently built and will last. When I...

    Sanding discs and saw blades

Do you need to put a pad between the sander and an abranet disc? Or do they go straight on like paper backed discs?

    Sanding discs and saw blades

Quick couple of questions please: 1. I’ve been using the ultra cheap sanding discs from toolstation on my 125mm Bosch random orbital sander, but they don’t last very long before losing their effectiveness. I’ve seen sanding mesh and wondered what peoples thoughts are on it? Worth getting? Or is...

Which bench dog / MFT system?

Or you could consider the Mafell. I went with it after reading the dust extraction was excellent and the rail joining method was superior to the Festool. Having lived with it for a year and used 2x 1600 rails to rip full sheets often I wouldn’t hesitate to make the same choice again. I’ve not...

Which bench dog / MFT system?

I have the benchdogs fence system and think it’s great for repeated cuts and braking down sheet goods into component parts. My only issue is the restricted cut size being around 900mm in ‘height’ which is the distance between the fence and my rail dog. I was looking to purchase their rail square...
