    Veritas Mk2 Honing Guide - Issues :(

If you're still in the market for a honing guide id recommend the Richard Kell guide. It also has it's own issues but it holds whatever you're sharpening reasonably well.

    Veritas Mk2 Honing Guide - Issues :(

I haven't owned the MK2 honing guide but did have the side clamping guide from veritas. Had the same issues unfortunately. Veritas guides are plagued with this after investigating at the time. Send it back get your money back or try the replacement. I went freehand in the end and stopped...

    Record No 5½

I also have a record stay set. Out of the four requirements mentioned I would ditch the stay set. It's nice just not a deal breaker and commands higher prices.

    Hello from a woodworking wife

Hi @Rebecca Snel welcome to the forum. I have had my saws sharpened and repaired by Jakob a good few years ago and they are still going strong in (almost) daily use. At the time we had a good chat via email about the history of the saws I sent across. Please pass on my regards.

    Wax oil products

Hi @Blackswanwood could you post some pictures of some finished items? I make the odd box, I saw peacock oil at Harrogate and I was tempted. I haven't found many examples of finished projects utilising it.

    Record StaySet - opinions

I use a stay set plane as one of my daily users. For me it's not a deal-breaker in regards to sharpening and the lever cap needs to be stiff to ensure the removable part seats on the iron efficiently. However the thicker cap iron does feel nicer in use imo.

Has anyone used this crystal clear shellac.

Has anyone used this crystal clear shellac.

Hello all, I went to pick up some Liberon shellac from a local store (not cornelissen) and was handed this. https://www.cornelissen.com/water-colour/gilding-varnish-and-lacquer/roberson-crystal-shellac-varnish.html I was assured it was the same stuff but seeing as it says 'shellac' and not...

Floorboards stain removal and finishing advice.

Hello all, I have a two part query. I've come across some staining when the carpet has been pulled up, looks like from a carpet runner in the past. Sanding, scraping and planing have had little effect. second part could you recommend a complete system (conditioning, staining sealing etc) for...

    Faded japaning.

I agree! It was just an aesthetic complaint and I was wondering if the fading was related to me cleaning it. I've left it as is as I've come to accept it and it performs like a champ.

    Dovetail half pin sizing.

Thank you for all the replies, I made a test joint with some skinny ends and as @johnnyb mentioned it gets a bit dicey fitting them. Looks like mitred ends is the way! Thank you for the photos, I'll hopefully post it in here when I get around to it. Thanks again.

    Dovetail half pin sizing.

Hello all, I'm making a small box out of black walnut around 40mm in height with a groove to hold the top and bottom. I usually do my half pins 10mm(ish) from the ends but I want to try and hide a groove in the tails. Cause I don't have a lot of height to play with if I was to go 5-10mm in...

    Faded japaning.

Thanks for the replies all, it seems to have darkened a bit but it may just be me getting used to it. Don't think I will paint it as I do like the original finish I don't know how close to it I would be able to get if I did it myself (brush marks). I'll save the link though, you never know !

    Faded japaning.

Hi all, So I was cleaning a plane I recently got which was quite grimy and greasy so I used a toothbrush with some dish soap as I've done plenty of times and wiped it off. The japanning has faded! It's no big deal just a bit gutted to be honest I really like the dark record blue. Has anyone...

    Shooting board woes

I had a similar problem. My fence was dead square to the board but always ended up with out of square cuts. The stock I was planning was too thick and even though my plane was razor sharp the piece would always move if the shaving was a tad too thick. Test using really light cuts on a piece of...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Finally finished my Danish stool build following Richard McGuires plans. A very rewarding but challenging build especially as this was the first piece of furniture I have made. Beech and black paper cord finished with BLO and a coat of wax. Special thanks to @johnnyb for guidance and help when...

    Marking Knives

I tend to use both pencil and a scalpel for my marking out. Only con with the scalpel is the blade is so fine it can wander if you're not paying attention and the knife line can be a bit shallow.
